If you asked Eric Cope in 2010 that his new business venture, Smile Squared, would help tens of thousands of children worldwide improve their oral hygiene, he might be skeptical. However, since its founding 3 years ago over 23,000 people have received toothbrushes through the concept of “Buy One, Give One.”
“We offer small products that make a big impact,” stated Cope.
After traveling to Central America in 2010 to volunteer, Cope and his wife realized how much dental health impacts a child’s life. Their time in Guatemala included teaching children how to brush their teeth without sinks or running water. “We came back wanting to do something; we knew donating was a short term solution to the worldwide issue. We wanted something that would have long term effects,” Cope explained. Striving to provide every child with the ability to have clean and healthy teeth, Smile Squared was developed.

What if you have the chance to share the power of a wish? For over 30 years the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human process with hope, strength, and joy. Originating in Arizona the foundation has become internationally known and has local chapters throughout the country and world.
In 1983, the Metro New York chapter opened their doors and serves the five boroughs and Long Island's Nassau County. As of September 2011 the chapter teamed with the Western New York chapter and now serves over 23 counties in New York State. The first wish granted by this local chapter was for a 7-year-old boy who wished to meet Catherine Bach, who portrayed Daisy Duke in the famous series Dukes of Hazard. In 2013, the chapter will grant its 10,000th wish.

A charity initiative brought to you by Gaz (Gary) Regan, Just One Shift, has an amazing (and fun) plan to raise $250,000 in a week long fundraising campaign by inviting bartenders worldwide to donate all or part of their tips from just one shift (Get it?). Fittingly, the funds raised will benefit Wine to Water, a non-profit founded by a bartender, that focuses on providing clean water to needy people worldwide. Since World Water Day is coming up on March 26th, it is the perfect time to get aboard the clean water wagon.

A few times during the year in Manhattan the Glamour Gals organization throws a fabulous event that aids in the benefit of our elderly. Past events have been hosted by Olympic hunk Jeremy Bloom (three-time World Champion, two-time Olympian and eleven-time World Cup gold medalist in freestyle moguls skiing). Glamour Gals is a not-for-profit who fosters self-esteem and mutual respect among two generations.
How many times have you sat down with your father, grandfather, mother or grandmother and they start telling you an intriguing story about their past. The connection that we have with those who are older than us is truly priceless. Glamour Gals helps bridge the gap between what is young, hot and hip & what will forever be timeless. They have created volunteer chapters who provide companionship and complimentary beauty makeovers to women living in senior homes. These chapters follow their "Hot Pink Leadership" curriculum. The seniors feel a renewed sense of beauty and dignity while the teens/younger ladies are able to discover their potential as leaders & compassionate community volunteers.
The creator of Glamour Gals, Rachel Mara Doyle has appeared in Glamour Magazine for her good deeds and bringing attention to the elderly that some people have a tendency to forget about. We all are so busy and wrapped up in the day to day, that we may forget to honor those who perhaps may now need a helping hand. Rachel with what she has created and her work brings smiles and empowerment to both the elderly women of Manhattan and also the younger girls of the community who take part in the makeovers -- it's a special kind of magic and experience that you can't bottle. As a passionate, motivated teen looking to honor her own grandmother, Rachel Doyle started the first GlamourGals chapter when she was only 17 years old. Over a decade later, Rachel has the same enthusiasm and drive for the GlamourGals mission. Her ability to continually streamline, evaluate, and redefine aspects of the organization has allowed the program to grow to over 1,400 volunteers in Chapters spanning the country.
Glamour Gals is having another powerful NYC soiree this season after Fashion Week. It's a really feel good charity! For further details visit the Glamour Gals website and their popular GG facebook page. This season's event will be co-hosted by Lauren Ruotolo and media personality Micah Jesse.
Perhaps, Oprah Winfrey in her quote about Glamour Gals and Rachel said it best, "Rachel Doyle has discovered there is nothing like a beauty makeover to lift the spirits of a woman, no matter what her age."
