An Evening with Maureen Davis of the Flutterbies
Comic books, make out music, heartache and sex

For those of you who haven't heard of The Flutterbies (a spoonerism pronounced Flut-ter-bye's), you've been missing out. The Flutterbies core group is as followed, Maureen Davis -- Lead Vocals & Guitar; Adam Daniel -- Vocals & Guitar;. Bart Ryan -- Lead & Lap Steel guitar; Steve "eye candy" Whalen -- Bass; Christopher Allis - Drums. The band is Maureen Davis & Adam Daniel, and the other band members flutter in and out of their music life -- playing either unplugged or full band every month.  With songs chalked full of lyrics intended to massage heartache and sooth bellowing emotions, the Flutterbies sound can best be described as Bonnie Raitt on a blind date with Beck while being served a shot of Southern Comfort by Janis Joplin in a Louisiana juke joint.

Maureen or Mo as she often goes by, graciously sat down with Joonbug to discuss her inspirations, the key to the Flutterbies success and what's on the horizon for the heart breaking, make out inspiring Alt Country/Rockabilly sensation from the heart of Los Angeles.

The Flutterbies have been touring in and around LA, Phoenix & hometown Ohio for a little over two years, with an upcoming East Coast tour (NYC/Chicago/Detroit/Baltimore) in May 2010. The nexus of the band began with Mo originally pop writing for cartoon composers. Mo's big break came when she took a gig writing lyrics for "Mikhail Baryshnikov "Stories From My Childhood " for PBS.  She then went on to produce 200 cues for Entertainment Tonight and eventually met with Mark Ferrari for Master Source Library. After performing several "Sound-A-Like" pieces for various spots, Mo found her sound after meeting with buddy Adam Daniel. "I was going through a very bad heartache and sighed a Bonnie Raitt cover of Cry like a rainstorm. From then on the songs grew out of me coming back to earth and not trying to be "Hollywood Mo" or "Broadway Mo", and just being real."

When asked about the Flutterbies inspiration, Mo laughing searches for the words to describe the bands influence and unique sound. "Heartache and sex. I could say more, but that's really it." The Flutterbies songs are about that gut wrenching, throat clogging, tear jerking feeling everyone who's ever loved and lost has or will undoubtedly feel at some time in their life. On the same note, the Flutterbies music has that familiar evocative ability to induce a spontaneous make out session. When asked about the music's lustful manipulation, Mo calls upon her own selection of make out hits like Led Zeppelin, The Black Keys, and Buddy Miller which have helped influence several libidinous tracks on the Flutterbies self titled debut album: The Flutterbies featuring Maureen Davis.

Since the album's debut in 2009, THE FLUTTERBIES were:

  • named Country Group of the Year at California's South Bay Music Awards;
  • were featured on Lufthansa In-Flight Radio on all worldwide flights (and will be again in March)
  • were nominated for 3 L.A. Music Awards;
  • were named Music Connection Magazine's Top 25 New Music Critiques of 2009 as well as Hot 100 Unsigned Bands;
  • were featured TWICE on Metrogum.com (it's like MTV for the Internet);
  • released a music video for their single "How I Get Over You" co-starring "Austin Power's" Mindy Sterling (Frau Farbissina/Dr. Evil's Girlfriend) which is receiving over 100 hits a day;
  • opened the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Convention -- made possible in part by pal and Country sensation Lynda Kay and sponsorship from James Trussart Custom Guitars
  • booked a March 8th performance at the world renowned Hotel Cafe in Hollywood California
  • booked Ronnie Mack's Barndance April 5th, alongside Country & Americana all-stars 50 Cent Haircut & Lynda Kay

Mo also candidly speaks of the Flutterbies future and their attempt to leave a much larger footprint in film and television. The possibility of pitching ideas to Academy Award Nominated director/producer Quentin Tarantino appears to makes the lead singer giddy with excitement and anticipation. Neil Gaiman, was another name Mo brushed upon, "I collect comic books. I love graphic art, and I think Neil Gaimen is amazing. I would love to do something with his work."

As far as new music, fans can rest assured that sultry crooner Mo will be at it again. Mo speaks openly of the origin of The Flutterbies newest song, First rain of October; "I couldn't speak, I went over to Adam's and his guitar is like truth serum. And he could tell I was all... my throat was all closed up and there was a tear in my eye and it wouldn't come out because I was just too proud. I was afraid if I started crying I wouldn't stop. I wrote the words "First rain Of October" on a piece of paper, and the song came alive." Fans should also keep their eyes on ITunes to see new Flutterbies songs appear as the band writes them.

From spots on TV, coast to coast tours, and recent videos, The Flutterbies are doing it all and bringing their Alt Country flair with them. Mo left our conversation with a pearl of wisdom she imparts on her students she works with at Rock Nation, "You play the music and try and change the world with it however you can and hopefully for the better."
