Bob Smeaton, acclaimed director of The
Beatles Anthology returns with The Beatles on Record, a documentary
revolving around the making of each album. The entire discography is explored,
and is narrated with sound clips of the Beatles themselves. No narration or
extra acting was brought into the piece, only what already existed from the
Beatles and the producers on the albums.
Each album is dissected, with the creative process behind each piece of music being examined. The recording processes from the songwriting section to the arrangement of the albums were focused on, with out-takes and rare footage from the Abbey Road recording sessions being featured. Their meteoric rise is captured in the documentary, from the success of their first album and finally to the last album they recorded together.
Their entire eight year career together is detailed, showing the maturity and growth of all the members musically. Included was their experimentation with new instruments and sounds. The piece also shows how the group evolved from focusing on making singles to the thought they put into making a cohesive, full-length album. The group also speaks candidly on their favorite songs, albums, and how they felt about their own music.
As part of the Miami International Film Festival, the viewers of the film were treated to an exclusive chance to ask questions to the director after the screening. Questions from the audience included what the Beatles members were like, as well as how the documentary was made.
While only an hour long, the documentary captures the making of some of the biggest hits from the entire discography, and sheds new light on The Beatles.
