Curly girls, love your hair and let Lorraine Massey show you how with "Curly Girl: The Handbook." Consider this your self-help guide to gorgeous locks.
Lorraine Massey is the founder and co-owner of the popular salon group, Devachan, specializing in curly hair upkeep. She is also co-creator of DevaCurl, a line of products formulated specifically for curly girls. After identifying a void in the hair care industry, Lorraine Massey, a curly girl herself, was inspired to create a manual to teach curly girls how to manage, maintain and, most importantly, adore their beautiful tresses. In Massey's book, she celebrates the curl from zigzag to botticelli to waves.
Massey recalls growing up and being ashamed of her curls. She was taunted and teased because curly hair was unacceptable, and straightening curls was encouraged. At some point, Massey decided to embrace her curly mane but then encountered difficulties finding salons and hair care products. She took it upon herself to introduce curly hair products and techniques into the market and currently gives seminars on her methods.
In Massey's book, she identifies everything from healthy eating habits and daily maintenance, to cutting and coloring. There's even delicious at home recipes for curl care, like "Lavender-It-With-Love Spray" for cleansing and deodorizing, or "Wrapunzel" with avocado, honey/agave syrup and jojoba/olive oil for nourishing and moisturizing. The book also includes stories from curly girls around the world who were once encouraged to cover their curls but at some point accepted the individuality and beauty of their hair. This book is so amazing because even amongst the curl community, Massey realizes that all curls are not created equal and she highlights specific routines and techniques for all curl types. What's more is that she included a section for the manly curl. Yes, men, there's a section for you too!
