Sigh.
Unfortunately, for all of David Beckham’s fans (which is pretty much any girl who has seen his Armani Exchange underwear ads), the soccer star with not be competing in the 2012 Olympics in London. The legendary athlete did not make the final cut for the 18-man Great Britain squad.
Beckham, one of the highest paid athletes in the world, became an international star playing for Manchester United. Beckham was the England’s captain in the 2006 World Cup. In 2007, he moved to Los Angeles with his Spice Girl wife, Posh Spice Victoria Beckham, along with their adorable children to play for the L.A. Galaxy.
Even though he is not playing in the Olympics this year, he has every intention of being the team’s biggest supporter. Beckham is credited for bringing the 2012 Olympics to his home country.
Despite not playing, he took part in the handover ceremony of the Olympic flame this past May. Here is what Beckham has to say about not making the cut for the team:
“Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad,"
"Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."
"As a Londoner, I have been really proud to have played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my home town, and I can't wait for the Games to begin."
We are happy he is being such a champ about not making the cut and will continue to be a major support to the team. Hey, as long as we get to see his beautiful face on the sidelines we will be happy.
Too bad he won’t be taking his shirt off!
