MTV's Jersey Shore may be raking in the dough for themselves, as well as the network, to showcase their "Guido" lifestyles of GTL & fist-pumping, but seems like not everyone is a fan.
Preppy clothing company Abercrombie & Fitch has always been accustomed to attracting customers through their cute ensemble pieces and good-looking (semi-naked) models on their ads. However, they are not happy with the unofficial attention being given by Jersey's favorite partygoers. More specifically, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino. Perchance this is a nicer way for the company to tell 29-year-old Sitch to ditch the duds since he's not exactly in their target age demographic? Just sayin'.
"We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino's association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image...We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but [we] believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans", said by A&F via press release yesterday, according to CNN.
Ah, but then they offer to sweeten the pot: "We have therefore offered a substantial payment to Michael 'The Situation' Sorrentino and the producers of MTV's The Jersey Shore to have the character wear an alternate brand. We have also extended this offer to other members of the cast, and are urgently waiting a response," they continued. No words as of yet from the cast and MTV.
Fair enough, but really? Whatever happened to "any publicity is good publicity"? If you're an avid MTV watcher, "fashionable" Gary Shirley from Teen Mom seems to wear nothing but Aeropostale shirts. Then again, no clothing chain would want a repeat of the Ed Hardy debauchery that occurred when Jon Gosselin was going through his mid-life crisis a couple of years back. The brand instantaneously became synonymous with the word "douchelord".
The bigger question remains: do people still shop at Abercrombie? Kidding, of course, it's the broke college student in me that holds a little bitterness. No hate, I still have a pair of their fabulous flip flops. As for the Jersey Shore cast, may we suggest they look for fashion inspiration elsewhere?
