Looks like singer Jennifer Lopez has gotten herself into some major controversy with her latest Turkmenistan Performance! The 43 year old singer serenaded Turkmenistan Dictator, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow with a “Happy Birthday” song on Saturday night. But unfortunately what Ms. Lopez did not know was of the leader’s tyrannical record of human rights violations in the country!
The event was hosted by the China National Petroleum Corp. and wasn't a political event, her publicist tells Associated Press. But although it was not a political event, Berdimuhamedow did attend. The birthday croon was a last-minute wish made by the corporation to Lopez before she went to take the stage, and she "graciously obliged," the statement revealed.
Berdimuhamedow, who was turning 56, has been criticized for oppressive rule by human rights organizations. Human Rights Watch states that Turkmenistan is "among the most repressive in the world." Alongside, a United Nations rep noted just last month that "a lot more work is needed" for the nation to reach "international standards."
After her performance, she was quickly criticized by the non-profit Human Rights Foundation for the performance. This lead to statements and backlash from several people, including Human Rights Foundation president Thor Halvorssen who stated in a press release, “What is the next stop on her tour, Syria? The dictator of Kazakhstan’s birthday is July 6, maybe she will also pay him a visit?”
The Latina pop star's rep stated, "Had there been knowledge of human rights issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended," said the rep. So it’s definitely clear our girl J. Lo had no clue of the dictator’s beliefs or actions, but we do have a feeling she’s going to start ‘googling’ the name before saying yes to any performance requests!
