The Obvious Oscars
No surprises, the superb rises.

Sentimentality and fond memories ruled the Oscars last night. From the classic films "The Artist" and "Hugo" dominating with five awards each to Meryl Streep finally winning her first best-actress prize in nearly three decades ,and longtime favorite Billy Crystal returning as host; it was a rather safe as expected affair all around.

Even though the ceremony itself ran about 3 hours , it seemed a lot longer with the addition of comic bits that at times felt like fillers. For example, the Christopher Guest mockumentary crew pretended to be a focus group picking apart "The Wizard of Oz." Presenters Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow pretended to bicker in efforts to make a documentary; it had its funny moments only because of Downey's charismatic character.

In between awards, there were montages of nominees describing their experiences and movies they love best. On a night when the quality of films is recognized and the love of movies is self evident, we were repeatedly told how we should feel by these clips.

And did we mention the amazing Cirque de Soleil performance!? That was beautiful and definitely memorable to say the least!

One of the best moments would have to be when Christopher Plummer won for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Beginner. He made history by becoming the oldest actor to ever receive an Oscar!

However, our personal favorite moment would have to be when Octavia Spencer won for The Help. In a highly emotional speech, she thanked Steven Spielberg for changing her life. Of all the awards, the audience was most welcoming of Spencer’s win for her role as the sassy maid Minny Jackson. That's what the Oscars are all about! What did you guys think?
