Google Celebrates Freddie Mercury's Birthday

For most of us, it’s a lazy Labor Day today, but for anyone surfing Google it’s a miniature birthday party for Freddie Mercury. He is known as one of the most brilliant performers and as frontman for Queen, one of the most beloved bands in music’s history. His struggle and untimely death is something the entire country still mourns. Today, however, is his birthday, and Google is known for its historical birthday celebrations.

The creative minds and artists at Google have made a truly fun tribute to the rock hero. The playable logo for Google’s page is a pixellated music video to the tune of Don’t Stop Me Now. It’s one of Queen’s most upbeat and celebratory songs--really suiting for a birthday. The video is adorable and funny, making tons of references to other Queen songs and even the movies that made them even more popular. The animation is both colorful and cool. It's enough to make fans want a video game of Freddie Mercury's space adventures.

For most of the world, the celebration begins today, but America will wait until tomorrow to put up its creation for the United States out of respect for Labor Day’s very serious history. Google remains plain for now, but check back tomorrow for the fun front page. Those who would rather not wait, though, can sneak a peek at the video below.
