New York is one of the big hubs for graffiti artists. It’s no suprise, given the city’s history, terrain, and grey walls screaming for color. It’s rare, however, to suddenly find a mural gracing your street. D*Face is a U.K. street artist known for blending mediums and combining inspiration to create art for the public. Posters, stencils, paint, and stickers are among his arsenal of spray paint when creating a piece. This month, he’s brought all of that with him to the Big Apple and has left his mark in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

As a child, it was the photography of Henry Chalfant that inspired him to seek out graffiti. Chalfant, known for photographing what was labeled as “urban culture”, was among the first and most famous to document subway graffiti in New York City. The work he brought to light compelled Dean Stockton, now simply known as D*Face to create his own. Now he’s throwing a few pieces back our way, pulp comic style. Two seemingly Roy Litchtenstein-inspired murals were spotted in SoHo and Williamsburg. A skeleton faced man embraces a buxom blonde in one and the Grim Reaper hangs out with a pair of dice in another, making for a colorful yet eerie sight on the streets.

“Love Her, Hate Him” and “Love Lost” were created as part of Corey Helford Gallery's Armory Week program. He’s posted snap shots of the pieces and some of his process on his website. If you’re a fan of his work, check out SCOPE New York, Miami, and Basil which feature work by D*Face and other really great artist.
