While most clever proposals employ a clever ring box or setting, this one takes things to a whole new level. Literally. Gary Hudston, in an effort to surprise his girlfriend Stephanie, approached designers Doug Hoogland and Rachel van der Meer and commissioned a few custom Portal 2 levels for his proposal. He even got Ellen McLain, voice of the aforementioned and well-loved murderous robot, GLaDOS, to provide some snappy dialogue. The series of puzzles are, of course, themed around romance and marriage and Hudson’s proposal was slowly unveiled as his girlfriend played the game.
Even non-gamers will find the levels both cool and endearing. The dialogue is clever and funny and the levels would mesh seamlessly with the real video game. The effort and detail are really heartwarming, and even though the audience can feel a proposal coming, the surprise at the end is fantastic. For the curious, she absolutely said “yes.”
