She Can Leap Tall Buildings
An awesome tribute to super moms!

Mothers get one day out of the year to be celebrated for all they do. They’re unsung heroes every other day of their lives and they’re saddled with the most thankless of tasks. They fed us, clothed us, raised us, and sometimes they did it all on their own. Frankly, putting up with us for years seems like a Herculean task on its own, but many of our mothers did it, and they did it with a lot of love. Paying tribute to the modern mothers of the world is photographer Heidi Lender, with a photoset appropriately titled She Can Leap Tall Buildings.

In it, a faceless, nameless, woman with pretty big hair takes on the tasks our mothers did for a good chunk of our lives. She’s a woman not limited to household chores or a job. She’s everything. Lender does a great job creating a character that’s very human in a few images. Her simple, drawn on backgrounds create an interchangeable environment. This isn’t one house and one mother--this is any home, and this is many of our mothers. She’s busy, a little frazzled, humorous, and yes, sometimes a human that still comes with emotion and sexual desire. Lender’s images almost create a peek into the private world of mothers, or more appropriately, the world many never take a chance to look at.

Mothers are not these sterile creatures of endless nagging we, sitcoms, or the media have shaped. Mothers are human beings with goals and dreams who just happen to start a family and it’s so easy to forget that. The world demands a lot from moms--maybe more than her children. Lender’s humorous and fun hats off is true to its title. Mothers do it all and they do it without expecting anything back. If that’s not superhero material, we really don’t know what is!
