Restaurant News from Abroad
"The Modern Toilet"

I know this is meant to be a blog about the local food scene, but every now and then one reads about culinary trends from afar that are too tasty to pass up. Consider this one of them.

A popular Taiwanese restaurant chain called “The Modern Toilet,” serves up a variety of moderately priced dishes like noodles, curries or fried chicken. This doesn’t really seem too outlandish, but what is more unusual is that they are served in mini-toilets, and are actually made to resemble excretions (if you’re the type of person who is squeamish about eating guacamole because you think it resembles green snot, this isn’t the place for you). What’s more, patrons of “The Modern Toilet” eat their meals while sitting on toilets and drink there beverages from miniscule plastic urinals that they can take home with them as a souvenir.

While it may appear like one is consuming human waste, everything about the restaurant is very clean and sanitary. The presentation of the food is “supposed to shock and confuse the senses,” says Modern Toilet manager Chen Min-kuang. So it’s merely a question of mind over matter. With dessert ice creams with names like “Diarrhea with Dried Droppings” (chocolate), “Bloody Poop” (strawberry) and “Green Dysentery,” however, you probably have to be mentally quite well adjusted as far as your attitude towards food goes. Or not.

But don’t take my word for it. Take a gander.
