Bands to replay classic albums at next year's All Tomorrow's Parties fest.

It's not quite a year away, but the performers for next year’s “All Tomorrow’s Parties” festival in Monticello, NY, on September 3-5 (Labor Day week-end) have been officially announced…at least for the first day.

Following a trend that is quickly becoming a popular, albeit lazy, occurrence in live concerts, the first day of the festival will feature bands playing some of their more popular albums in their entirety. Day one headliners, Iggy and the Stooges, will be playing all the tracks from their classic noise-punk album Raw Power. The three main supporting acts, Mudhoney, The Scientists, and reunited Sleep, will also be performing Superfuzz Bigmuff, Blood Red River, and Holy Mountain, respectively. This replaying of band’s classic albums is part of a series titled “Don’t Look Back.”

Where the success of an album is often predicated on its inclusion in live performances, this recent gimmick of playing full albums in their entirety is quickly becoming an obvious ploy to extort fickle fans into actually purchasing tickets for concerts. These are the same people who disavow their love for said groups when they attempt to expand their musical horizons. After all, where would the Beatles be if every one of their songs sounded like “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”? Think about it.

On the other hand, when a band becomes tired of the demand for certain songs that they are forced to play over and over and over again, they tend to lose all meaning to the band, who then vows to never play that tune again. Even though I, personally, object to rehashing classic tunes, it would be a memorable sight to see Iggy and the Stooges put all the wanna-be, trust-fund punkers, who begged “mommy and daddy” for ticket money, in their place while playing a chest stabbing, peanut-butter smearing version of “Search and Destroy.”
