It's only a matter of time before catchy songs, an amazing live presence, and down to earth 'tudes will make a band famous, which means The Summer Set are on their way. Co-headlining with good friends The Cab on the "Everything's Fine, Symphony Soldier" tour are just one of the many plans the band has in store for them this year. Releasing their album Everything's Fine has the band heading overseas right after this tour - but for right now, drummer Jess Bowen had a chance to tell us all about The Summer Set's experiences on this tour and a little bit about making Everything's Fine.
Joonbug: So The Cab has been raving about the tour with you guys so far, how are you feeling about it?
Jess Bowen: Well the feeling is mutual! This has probably been my favorite tour we’ve done. I'm probably going to be copying all of their answers. All the shows have been selling out, everyone’s coming out. The Cab and us have done a lot of tours together but we’ve never got to both headline so it’s been really fun.
Is there anything you’ve been able to do as a co-headliner that you couldn’t do as a supporting act?
Jess: Definitely playing more songs, we’ve gotten longer sets. We’ve been taking turns headlining every night in each state. We each get our hometowns. They have tonight in NYC, we get tomorrow in Boston.
Any main influences when recording “Everything’s Fine”?
Jess: We all have a lot of different influences and taste that we’re able to bring together as a band. We all love '90s rock music – Jimmy Eat World, Third Eye Blind. But when we were recording different songs we were listening to different bands. Sometimes Coldplay, sometimes Regina Spektor. When recording the album we took it song by song and tried each one different ways. If we didn’t like how it came out then we’d go back and re-record it a different way. The experience recording it was really, really great.

Jess: We were in the studio and we’re all sitting there and we were on a deadline to get the album out. We had a tour right after so we couldn’t extend our recording time, it was crunch time and we still had one or two songs we were still recording. We were all sitting there and either John or Josh were like “okay, okay. Everything’s fine, everything’s fine” and we all just kind of looked. It really just summarizes how we are as a band and how our experience with recording was going.
What would you like fans to get from your live shows?
Jess: Really hope they can appreciate the musicianship and effort we put into each tour. I mean we really just want to get better with each tour, sometimes we’ve played songs in a different way than they’re on the record. Just spent a few days at home practicing a new way to play a song. I hope they can appreciate that and just have fun with the live show and enjoy being there as much as we enjoy playing for them.
