Even the palpable heat and caked humidity could not stop Silversun Pickups from rocking out the nascent Sunset Cove Amphitheater in Boca Raton, FL. What promises to be a prodigious epicenter for music in South Florida with upcoming acts like Cypress Hill, Slightly Stoopid and the reemerging Sublime with Rome, decided to invite Silversun early on to sample Boca’s new musical Coliseum.
Silversun frontman Brian Aubert took a few minutes out only hours before his June 16 show to call Mike Rothman to discuss this new venue, Latin food in South Florida, the meaning behind the esoteric name Silversun and the influence touring with bands like Foo Fighters and Muse had on the Pickups. Aubert also made one lucky fan’s day, maybe even year, as David DiCristina was invited to drop in with a few questions of his own.
Mike Rothman – You ready for the new Sunset Cove in Boca Raton?
Brian Aubert – So far so good, just a little steamy. That’s why everyone’s skin looks so good out here. I am sure it will cool down at night just in time for the mosquitoes to come.
Mike – How is South Florida different from other places you’ve toured?
Brian – It feels like a vacation all the time. So it’s really fun to come down especially during Christmas shows because most places are cold.
Mike – Any plans while down here to enjoy the nightlife? Any restaurants?
Brian – We hung out in Orlando last night a bit but it was the Universal Studios thing. There is only so much time you can hang out in Margaritaville. I think we are gonna try and go do stuff with water involved.
I always want to try and Cuban food when I am around this area. It’s parallel to getting good Mexican food in LA.
Mike - What should fans expect for the Sunset Cove concert and the tour?
Brian – We have been relying heavily on Swoon (2009) and a bunch of other song we will throw in. So its pretty heavy Swoon (2009), then some Carnavas (2006) and maybe a little dash of Pikul (2005).
Mike – Any plans for a new album in 2010 or 2011?
Brian – No not yet. We are still swimming in this Swoon world. We are still having a love affair with it. We have been busy and we are not the kind of band that starts writing on the road. We are not gonna make a tough life record or be the Eagles.
Mike – Where does the band name Silversun Pickups come from?
Brian – It's homage to our neighborhood in LA called Silver Lake. Nikki [Monninger, bassist] and I lived in this house for quite a while and there was a liquor store there that everyone would go to and we just named the band homage to that. But now, every time I go into that liquor store, the guy says I need to talk about it more in interviews. I said man, you are doing fine, you are a liquor store.
Mike – Does he throw you free alcohol?
Brian – No, I think he charges me more. Haha.
Mike – You guys have toured with Muse and Foo Fighters, how do veteran bands like these leave an impact?
Brian –Very rarely do you meet bands that are dicks. I don’t think people put up with that shit. Once in a while you will come across bands that are a little lame.
Then you meet people that are incredibly warm and amazing and Foo Fighters there is not a drop of ego in that dude Dave [Grohl’s] body, I mean what a good guy. They are just so generous. It is something you look at and we always inspire to do. It is super important to make sure the supporting bands feel 100 percent involved. You would almost rather tour with the band that musically you’re not sure about but that are nice than the band you adore and are a bunch of dicks.
Mike – So I am going to let David DiCristina step in and take over. Here is your fan.
David DiCristina - I’ve been a fan of Silversun Pickups pretty much since the release of their debut album “Carnavas” in 2006. I once planned my LA vacation around their concert tour so that I could watch them live when I visited. It’s pretty surreal that I actually got a chance to talk with Brian and share my thoughts on the band and the music.
David – A lot of your music has been sampled in surf videos like “A Fly in the Champagne.” Just curious, do you guys surf?
Brian – No, none of us surf which is hilarious because my family is Hawaiian. For some reason in LA we don’t go to the beaches that much. They are just kind of crowded and not that nice. We are more skaters and just started snowboarding.
David – The first time I heard Silversun Pickups was on MySpace with the song “Three Seed,” and I was hooked as a fan. What’s the meaning behind that song?
Brian – “Three Seed” is about repeating patterns and its funny cause it has come up a lot lately. We got to rehearse that thing because people have been asking for it a lot. It's one of my favorite songs from Carnavas (2006). But yeah it is about repeating patterns and having three completely different situations that as obtuse as they were from each other they almost shared a singular path. The three seed in that song actually refers to one of the people involved in that song and she is a triplet.
David – I actually heard the band was once named A Couple of Couples, is that true?
Mike – At the time when we first started we had Silversun Pickups so quickly but we did joke we would be called A Couple of Couples because at the time the lineup was different. It was Nikki and her boyfriends and me and my girlfriend. You could call us the Fleetwood Mac of Silver Lake. That version of Silversun ended just about as bad as Fleetwood Mac did with a bang.
David – Speaking of couples, any significant others back home?
Mike – I actually just got married a month ago. That is why we were off for a month. Basically, we got married in Italy. Now when I call home, I say hello wife!
