The lineups for the 2009 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival have been made public. The festival, which has become one of the most anticipated concert events in the United States in recent years, will take place on the weekend starting Friday, April 17th, and will conclude that Sunday. Paul McCartney, the Cure, and the Killers have each been announced as a headliner for one of the three nights.
The festival kicks off with Friday’s festivities, which will showcase the aforementioned McCarthy, what should definitely be an exciting set from mash-up maniac Girl Talk, and what I can only imagine will be an awesome set from N.A.S.A., a collaborative effort by two deejays who worked with everyone from David Byrne to Tom Waits to KRS-One and Chuck D on their upcoming album, The Spirit of Apollo. It’s unclear what musicians will accompany them for the performance, but hopefully a fair number of the artists they featured on their incredible, genre-bending debut album will join in. One of the most underrated groups in hip hop, chilled-out west coasters People Under the Stairs, will also perform, as will The Black Keys, Morrissey, M. Ward, Crystal Castles, and Gui Borrato, to name a few.
There will be no relent on Saturday, as the Killers headline. Amy Winehouse will also be making an appearance, presuming she has finally left St. Lucia by this point (although it’s quite possible that she won’t have gotten around to it yet). Fleet Foxes, whose Ragged Wood was recently named by Pitchfork as the Best Album of 2008, will also take the stage. Glasvegas will take the trip over from Scotland, and indie-rap darlings Atmosphere will also perform. Other notable names on the bill for Saturday will include TV On the Radio, Dr. Dog, Band of Horses, and disco revivalists Hercules and Love Affair.
Last but certainly not least is the Sunday finale, with legendary English alternative/new wavers The Cure headlining. Sunday promises to be great for hip-hop fans, with heavy hitters The Clipse and Lupe Fiasco performing, as well as K’Naan, a rap troubadour straight out of Somalia - and adding to the excitement, a blast from the past with Public Enemy. Sunday will also feature performances by definitive shoegazers My Bloody Valentine; who were expected to headline last year, Swedish pop phenom Lykke Li, Antony and the Johnsons, X, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
