“When I was 13 I took my bar mitzvah money and bought myself some turntables and a mixer. I practiced for about 18 hours a day. Then I came out of my basement, packed my lunch and won a bunch of world championships.”
Montreal’s very own A-Trak (aka Alain Macklovitch) has been an acclaimed turntablist for eleven years, winning his first competition at the DMC’s World DJ Championship when he was just fifteen years old in 1997. He was both the youngest and the first Canadian to ever take home the prize. After breaking through that glass ceiling- he didn’t stop, also being the first to win all three major DJ competition titles (DMC, ITF and Vestax) and the first to win five world championships.
He has been quoted saying that DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince were what ultimately turned him onto the art of mixing. A-Trak mashes up classic and current hip-hop beats with crazy techno tracks. He can make just about anyone get up off their chair and shake it. He was the hand picked DJ to tour with Kanye West for his Graduation Tour, and is the younger brother to David Macklovitch- who is a famed member of the band Chromeo. A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs founded Fool’s Gold Records in 2007. You can also find him in the fashion scene collaborating with New Era, Kid Robot and Zoo York.
