on a hot summer night, with a smile plastered on...

We had the opportunity to sit down with Kat and speak to her about the new record, where she's been the past couple of years, and more!

We haven't heard anything from you in a while - we've missed you! What have you been up to?

Joonbug! Everything is great, I have been in the lab creating and traveling. It's been a long but fun process. Every time I thought I finished my album a bigger idea would come to mind and I'll be back to square one. To me that's amazing. I prefer waiting a while until I release an album because if it isn't ready.  I would hate putting out work without having my gut tell me "That's the one!"  My music is my child.

We see you've recently teamed up with The Bello Boys for their record, "Last Call." How did that all come about?

Hollywood Hamilton (Sean Bello) and I are very good friends. We have always talked about doing something together.  When he played me the song I said to him "We got one!" It made total sense this song, the sound, it definitely will make people get up and dance! I'm honored to be a part of this project.

We've heard that you and the Bello Boys have a Spanish version of "Last Call" coming out as well. Could you tell us a bit about your Spanish fan base and favorite Spanish territories?

After I finished the English version, we definitely thought we should record a Spanish version and specially because of my Dominican roots. To me it's always important to have Spanish versions of any work I do. Although my music is considered pop/American, I always do a Spanish version to involve my Latino fans! They support me majorly! Latinos!

Is there any solo material in the works?

Yes and I'm very excited about it! Vibrant rhythms, love and hate as well as jazzy slow ones but also I gave my vocals a bit more work to do [laughs]. I'm having so much fun in my life and you will feel it through my music. It will be a very fresh sound to the fans but a very known one to me. I decided to come as I am and who I've always been: a singer!  I literally can sing and work any style and genre, so why have a lane? My true lane is my fans!  At the end of the day singing is what I do and everything else comes with it. That's Kathleen speaking...stay tuned!

Who else would you like to eventually collaborate with?

There are a few people I have in mind. Kanye WestJohn Legend and Juanes.

Who have you been listening to lately?

My musical taste is very rare and extremely diverse at times but that's what shapes my sound. I love SadeMichael JacksonBeyonceDiana Krall, but I mostly love movie soundtracks like "Skyfall 007," "Les Miserables", and of course "The Lion King" which in my opinion is one of the best written and produced movie soundtracks of this century! But  to tell you the truth I really don't listen to the radio. I only listen to whatever I am working on at the time or to my early inspirations who are some of the people I first mentioned. I feel like the more I study my songs the better I get at being me. Listening to other music constantly can sometimes confuse artists musically. I don't want to sound like everyone else. I believe everything's been done before but each singer should have something different in their sound. Okay... I'm being a total music nerd right now but I love it!

What's next for you?

My plan is to live my destiny and to enjoy my musical given gift with the world. God put me here with a plan and with his help I will inevitably rise to the top. Anything is possible you just have to believe be prepared and build the strongest skin you possibly can and have fun!

Oh, and I LOVE Joonbug.com!
