"If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends / Make it last forever, friendship never ends..." That's right; that was Mel C back in the glorious days of the Spice Girls! Melanie Chisholm, formerly Sporty Spice, has come out with a brand new single that has just been released in the U.S. by Radikal Records. Loving You, features UK X-Factor's winner, Matt Cardle, in a romantic tune that is destined to start legions of hearts fluttering madly! Joonbug spoke with Melanie about her new single, the current state of pop music, and more:

From your hit, First Day of My Life, released in 2005, to now, how do you think your music has changed?

I've had such a wonderful career and have always loved so many different styles of music. I absolutely consider myself a pop artist, starting out with the Spice Girls then experimenting more as a solo artist with rock and dance influences, I also love working acoustically. I have worked in musical theatre in the last few years too which reminded me of so many wonderful songs from my childhood I had left behind. First Day was a big old traditional ballad. I love it all so I don't know if I've changed, I'm just greedy!

What is your opinion on pop music now compared to the Spice Girls days?

I think pop music in is a pretty good place right now. Interesting artists with great songs who kill it live like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. Things felt a lot more innocent in the 90's but I think that is more to do with changing culture than music.

In September 2012 was the release of your 6th studio album, Stages. What is your favorite track from that album?

After working in Blood Brothers in the west end, and an arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar I was inspired to record an album of musical theatre songs and other covers I'd always wanted to do. My Favourite on the album is the one I was most nervous to do. I did a version of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now and was terrified to cover such an incredible artist, but it is such a fulfilling song to sing and turned out so beautifully it became my favourite track on the album.

I Know Him So Well ft. Emma Bunton was your first official single, what’s the story behind it?

I Know Him So Well is a fantastic song from the musical Chess I have done such wonderful duets in my career and usually with men! I thought it was time to duet with a woman and Emma Bunton was my absolute first choice. She is one of my closest friends I love her voice and adore working with her. It was so special working together again. I'm sure it won’t be the last time!

What are your expectations regarding your music career in the next year?

I'm touring the UK with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at the moment which is amazing. I'm looking forward to getting back in to the studio to start work on a new pop record next year. Matt is touring Porcelain in 2014 and I'm hoping to join him on a few dates to sing Loving You. We have a lot of fun working together, and he's awesome live!
