Karen O, Where’d you go?

As one of the Pioneering Indie Divas – amongst Leslie Fiest, Regina Spektor, Jenny Lewis, Emily Haines and a few choice others – Karen O has been off the radar for a surprising amount of time.  It’s been two years since the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s have released an album together and the same two years since O wrote the score for the Spike Jones adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are.  We were beginning to think we had seen the last of Rocktopolis’ Lady Hero.  But then the skies opened up and a sun shower of good news rained down.

In October, the Vice and Intel collaborative venture, The Creators Project, which is “dedicated to supporting artists in realizing their creative visions through technology”, announced their “freakishly over-the-top week-long extravaganza” to take place in Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York.  The cultural event will be produced by The Studio – a multimillion dollar studio that built by The Creators Project which creates and distributes artists that utilize multi-faceted disciplines of creative arts.

And who better to play the role of the centerpiece than the illustrious indie-queen herself.  It is during this week (actual dates are yet to be announced) that Karen O will be premiering her self-penned “Psycho Opera” at St. Anne’s Warehouse.  Details of the actual show are sparse, but two facts are known.  One, famed writer and playwright, Adam Rapp, will be directing the opera and two, the theme of the project is “an assault on the tragic joys of youth.”  One can only speculate where O is going with this, but if it’s anything as whimsical and raw as her music, we’re all in for a real treat.
