After attending an exclusive screening on the 23rd, viewers were entertained as well as educated on what goes into the creative process of making music. For the 90-minute running time, viewers got to experience the creative and collaborative process of five producers, as they set out to work with some of the greatest artists in their assigned genres. The likes of The Dap Kings, Trombone Shorty, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Ralph Stanley, and Martha Reeves graced the screen to collaborate with today's top DJs to bridge the musical gap between different genres and generations!
In this documentary, each producer is filmed during their process of remixing, recreating and re-imagining five traditional styles of music. With DJ Premier playing more of a “leading star” role, he helps connect the dots between the artists and genres featured. While Premier is tasked with handling the Classical music genre, Dubstep producer and recent Grammy-winner Skrillex is tasked with handling Rock. Producing duo The Crystal Method worked with R&B, Electronic-music star Pretty Lights was set to handle Country. Mark Ronson, who helped develop Amy Winehouse’s sound, was tasked with handling Jazz. Throughout the film their stories and creative processes intertwined and gave the viewer a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes of music. Not only is it amazing to watch these gifted musicians work outside of their comfort zones, it is even more amazing to see and hear the final product once it debuted on the screen. It was also interesting to see how all these strong personalities clashed when it came to doing what they love. The Re:Generation Music Project managed to capture some of the most influential musical styles, merge them together, and successfully create the ultimate musical mashups!
Although "The Re:Generation Music Project" is no longer in theaters, you can check out the finished projects here. And be sure to look out for it on DVD and Blu-Ray later this year. You'll definitely enjoy it.
We personally have a new found love for the oldies, and would like to give props to the featured DJs for doing their thing!
