Miley Cyrus’ MTV Unplugged performance was anything and everything but ‘unplugged.’ While the backing band may have been sans amps, Miley was still up to her old tricks in outrageous ensembles, forced sexuality, tounges sticking out and yes... even twerking.
Donned in a bikini, a denim studded jacket and pant combo, and a red gingham jumpsuit throughout the night, Miley performed songs from her hit album Bangerz (while repeatedly mentioning her roots as a country artist and Nashville native), as well as her impressive Dolly Parton cover and an Arctic Monkey jam.
Just like her past performances, Cyrus shined when the plushies and little people weren’t creating a circus and spectacle around her. Stripped down and singing her stories of love and lost, as she did in “Adore You,” Miley comes off as vulnerable, relatable, and even likable.
Fan favorite, Miley’s cover of “Jolene,” was a standout of the night as she showed off her country roots. Her strong voice rested comfortably in the twang of the melody and Miley easily proved to her critics that she can actually sing.
Madonna’s special guest appearance was the highlight of the Unplugged session. Like Madonna’s performance with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera years prior, it was a pop star explosion, and in lieu of kissing, there was some grinding and playful slapping between the two. The duo performed a medley of Madonna’s “Don’t Tell Me” and Miley’s “We Can’t Stop,” and it was as sparkling and entertaining as their glittery cowgirl outfits and Madonna’s grill.
Miley distortedly combined country and her fantasitcal pop music during her Unplugged session and it all went off without a hitch. Whether you love or hate her, you can’t deny that Miley Cyrus has the power to charm a crowd with her ridiculousness and continues to keep people talking.
Miley begins her Bangerz world tour February 14. For more info check out her official site.
