Chairlift: "Met Before" (Illum Sphere Remix)
Chairlift's airy synthpop is diced up into an shimmering mosaic by Manchester's Illum Sphere. This post-dubstep update is great, though it's a bit claustrophobic and does provoke nervous butterflies.
Damu: "Sjunga"
Damu, another Manchester-based producer, just dropped his first single after November's LP, Unity. "Sjunga" means "sing" in Swedish. The sound isn't cutting edge, but the way the lightly cascading peals, sophisticated beat and warped, soulful vocals come together is really lovely.
Dntl: "Bright Night"
Dntl, producer Jimmy Tamborello, is better known for being half of the Postal Service. But on June 5th that may change. Aimlessness, his debut as Dntl, is coming out on DJ Koze's label Pampa, and features collaborations with Baths and Nite Jewel. The enigmatic and glitchy "Bright Night" is the first track to be leaked off of Aimlessness.
Cymbals: "No Bad Decisions" (Becoming Real Remix)
London producer Toby Ridler's rework of London art-pop group Cymbals is far from a bad decision. The clean, organic beats and cropped vocal samples slowly marry and develop into a subtly atmospheric jam. It's also a free download.
Membrain: "Airic"
Claire Boucher (Grimes) was part of an avant-garde techno/industrial duo before releasing her debut Visions. The other half is street musician Tim Lafontaine. On the subject of their recent EP, Sit Back, Rewind, Grimes tweeted "it's really a live thing.. and, membrain is like 90 % Tim i.e. cop car bonfire -- i just do vocals for him but he's the genius...Membrain is also basically a live improv drone techno act - so its really hard 2 get it from recordings"... So the mp3 might not do Membrain justice, but it's still pretty cool. "Airic" was released last month, but didn't enter the blogosphere until this weekend.
