Pulse of the Party: DJ David Berrie
World famous DJ talks exclusively to Joonbug.

As one of the world's greatest DJs, David Berrie is the authority on what leads a crowd on a "musical journey." Check out his thoughts on the industry, the booth, and New York City nightlife.  From his set live on July 23 at Pacha, Dubset brings you the exclusive mix from David Berrie in one of New York's hottest clubs.

How has the role of the DJ transformed over recent years with the advent of live streaming and online listening?

Live streaming sites like Dubset and online listening sites like Soundcloud and MySpace gives DJs access to so many more listeners and potential fans. It used to be the only way to connect with listeners was through playing live. Now my music is downloaded globally.

What do you believe is your biggest contribution to the industry as a whole?

I hope the music I produce becomes my biggest contribution. I signed to Ultra Records last year and my single is coming out next month and I've worked on a lot of remixes recently. I love to DJ, but actually creating the music is an altogether different challenge and it's what really inspires me now.

With sites like Dubset, how do you see the DJ industry transforming in the next few years?  Where do you see it going?

I don't see sites like Dubset transforming the DJ industry.  I see it accelerating the industry's already substantial growth. Dubset will be able to raise the profile of all types of DJs and allow their music to be enjoyed in places in which it's not typically heard.

What are your brief thoughts on the New York City nightlife scene and what do you think about the venues New York has for DJs Favorite venue?

I play around the world, but there is no city with a more vibrant nightlife scene than New York. The city's cultural diversity lends itself to diverse crowds in clubs and there really are some world class venues. I played at Pacha last week for the first time. It's already my favorite venue.

How is music, especially DJ music, integral to the nightclub scene?

Music is the energy and pulse of the party. Club to club, the liquor is the same, but the music is something that really differentiates venues. I know it's corny to say, but I still like to think a great DJ can lead a crowd on a musical journey.

What has been your favorite show you played and why?

Felix Da Housecat, DJ Ruckus, and I played together at the Winter Music Conference Closing Party at The Florida Room in March. We've played together at WMC in the past, but this year was really special. The people there at the end of WMC really love the music and playing with such great DJs in an intimate venue was really memorable. We must have gone until 6 or 7am that night.

Give us the scoop on your biggest celebrity encounter while working in a nightclub?

I don't have that many wild stories, but when I was playing at Tenjune in February 2007, Britney Spears came to the booth to ask me to debut a couple of tracks from Blackout. It was right when she was mid-meltdown.
