May is looking to be a great month for concerts, made all the better by the one-two punch of Feist and Florence + The Machine at Radio City Music Hall.  These two distinctive vocalists are playing respective shows, the first week of May. Catch Feist on May 5th and Florence on May 8th.  Get your tickets soon, as these two ladies are sure to perform to sold-out crowds!

Feist, formerly of seminal indie band Broken Social Scene, has been making solo albums for a few years now, layering her sweet, subtle vocals upon a bed of folk and indie pop.  Best known for songs like "1234" and "My Moon My Man," Feist has begun enjoying crossover success as more and more people begin to realize what talent she possesses.

Recently, however, Feist has shown that she can offer more than cute.  For this year’s Record Store Day, she collaborated with metal band Mastodon to release a split 7” where the two bands each covered a song from the other’s library.  For those of you who don’t know them, Mastodon is a seriously heavy metal band, literally on the exact opposite end of the musical spectrum as Feist.  This made for an interesting and rewarding cover album, where both bands distill the essence from each other’s songs.  Sure their takes are quite different, Mastodon basically turned Feist’s song into a battle-metal epic, but that’s the beauty of these kinds of things, right?

Whereas Feist’s voice is sugary sweet, Florence uses her commanding and distinctive pipes in a totally different way.  As the leader of British indie pop band Florence + The Machine (although I have yet to discover who this ‘machine’ is), Florence has been flooring listeners with her vocals since her 2009 album, aptly named, Lungs.  Since then, the band has been nominated for numerous awards, including a Grammy nod and a BRIT Award win for best album.

Mixing several influences, ranging from African tribal music to Victorian operas, Florence has proven herself as one of England’s greatest vocal exports.  I apologize for going on and on about her voice, but it’s hauntingly beautiful.  Pair that with fun and epic songs and we’ve got a serious musical force to contend with.

If you missed it in the beginning, Feist will be playing May 5th and Florence + The Machine with be playing May 8th, both at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
