It has barely been a year since Rusko rattled Terminal 5‘s walls with his explosive dubstep masterpieces, but the English producer is returning to the big apple this summer to serve up another hearty helping of bass to the face.
That’s right dubstep fans, Rusko will be at Terminal 5 on May 13th, once again infecting the crowd with his wobbling and womping breakdowns!
The stop is part of his three-month-long spring tour which spans America from coast to coast, and even dips in to the Great White North for a few nights.
Rusko must have known his fans would be craving one of his notoriously-insane live performances after he released his sophomore album last week entitled “Songs." The eclectic, genre-bending album is making long-time supporters see their favorite dubstep ace in an entirely new light as Rusko departs from his traditionally womping sound and welcomes listeners into his reggae-inspired imagination.
“Songs” tells the improbable tale of when dubstep slowed its speedy-tempo to take a stroll with the thicker, more sedating tones of dub and roots. Rusko’s reggae influences can be felt throughout the album, like in the Rastafarian-sounding ska-anthem “Be Free” which takes listeners back to the lazy afternoons of the late 90‘s, spent fogging out cars while jamming to G Love and Special Sauce.
The genre-twisting love-story leaves its mark across the album, but fades into a silly summer fling as Rusko retreats back to his roots of rollercoaster rhythms and catchy chorus hooks. Rusko’s shows off his signature sound of wispy lyrics and layered tones in “Somebody to Love," the first song released off the album and an instantaneous hit. The DJ raises the bass ante even more with “Opium," an elevated take on Rusko’s classic combination of hypnotizing vocals and womptastic riffs.
I thought it nearly impossible for Rusko to top his debut album “O.M.G.!” which featured dancefloor hits including “Everyday,” Woo Boost,” and “Hold On,” but with the help of Diplo’s label Mad Decent, Rusko has once again created fresh sounds in a community where recycling beats has become commonplace. It’s here, in Rusko’s innate originality and dedication to perfecting each single beat until they flow harmoniously into one, that the DJ’s secret to success lies.
On top of dedicated production techniques, Rusko’s success can also be largely attributed to his face-melting live performances. The DJ spends a significant chunk of his time on the road, providing audiences with blood-pumping, dancefloor dynamite sets night after night. His production (depending on the venue) totes perfected aesthetics like colorful lazer beams, blasting fog machines, and whirlwinds of other surprises the DJ unleashes simultaneously with bassy-drops. With a look of determination and intensity smeared across his face, Rusko sets a goal of hyping every person in the crowd to the point of uncontrolled limb-flailing and head-banging (from personal experience, I can vouch that this goal is usually accomplished).
With the May 13th concert date slowly creeping up, it’s time to make a decision: do you want to have your minds blown by possibly the most fantastic dubstep DJ of the year? Or do you want to sit at home, surfing Facebook, twiddling your thumbs and thinking about what could have been. Electronic music lovers, come one come all to the concert that will kickstart a blissful summer of musical adventures.
