It's officially the end of an era, has anyone noticed a
little change on the bottom of MTV's logo? MTV will no longer include the words
‘music television' under the famous icon. For the first time in 29 years the
network has decided to give the logo a new image but I don't know if that comes
as a surprise to anyone being that MTV has long abandoned the format of
actually playing music some time ago.
It is a minor change but with major symbolism, outside of the VMA's and the cancellation of "TRL" MTV has waved goodbye to music as the program mainstay. It's a very sad time for anyone who actually saw MTV from the beginning; the network has become exactly what it stood against when it was first formed.
MTV used to be a place to see, believe it or not, music videos and interviews of your favorite artists. They would show live concerts and actually give you information about bands, but that has been long gone since the insurgence of reality television. The head of MTV's marketing added this on the subject, "The people who watch it today, they don't refer to MTV as music television. They don't have the same emotional connection that, say, the people who are writing about [the logo change] do," And I guess that's where this story ends, people don't have the same ‘connection' anymore. I guess it's safe to say that reality shows killed the video star.
Now the only question I have is, what does the M stand for? Moron?
