Boot it, Don’t Suit it: Men’s Summer Fashion Don’ts
Our men's style guide of what NOT to wear this summer!

This summer there are some great trends for men to don; from 3.1 Phillip Lim’s ombre obsessions, to Louis Vuitton’s work and sportswear, there seems to be inspiration everywhere for men to go mad with fashion this season. However, before you get started on your summer shopping, or try bringing out those super short jorts (jean shorts) you men all seem to love when the warm weather comes, we are having a ‘What Not To Wear’ moment at Glam Damn It and for your own sake (as well as your partner’s) suggest you check out our men’s summer fashion don’ts before you realize you might be sporting one of them.

So whether you’re reading this as a guy who needs extra help, or a partner trying to help your man make some much-needed attire advancements, grab your pen and paper and take some notes. No man shall be left behind!

White Ribbed Tank Top

Under absolutely NO circumstance is this allowed if you’re not mowing the lawn, or at the gym (and even then, c’mon there are other options). We know it gets hot out there guys, but there are so many other alternatives to choose from that you really have no excuse for wearing this. Say bye bye to Fruit of the Loom and try out something like this one by Saturdays Surf NYC. Let’s face it; if you’re going to wear a tank either way, you might as well get one that is simple and falls under the retro themed style that’s so big at the moment.

Bright Plaid Shorts

Unless you are planning on hitting a few golf balls at the driving range, please put the plaid shorts that were a one-hit-wonder circa 1995 in the bottom of your drawer and keep them there. If you enjoy the check or plaid pattern, take another route and go for a plaid/check button down collar t-shirt. With this, you can still wear as bright of plaids as you’d like and you’ll be right on trend point; it’s a win-win scenario! We love the plaid shirts that Gap is shelving at the moment.

Dark Suits

Keep it light this summer- with both material and color. Linen suits and pastel colors are huge this season because they are a classic, clean style and will still help you to maintain that kept look you want whether you’re at the office or out to dinner. Instead of going for that navy blue suit you wear everyday, try out a pastel blue, a light grey, or even beige or cream. We’ve even seen a bit of khaki in the suit department! This will only benefit you by keeping you cool during the summer heat, and what man doesn’t look good in a crisp, light look? We love this two-button suit by Ermenegildo Zegna ($2,995). But if you are looking for something a little more budget friendly, H&M or Banana Republic also have a great selection of light colored suiting.

Bright Graphic + Embellished T’s

Leave the Ed Hardy behind this summer and leave the sparkle to women --where it belongs! T’s with swirls, animals, silver, and busy bedazzling may be okay when you’re hanging out with the Jersey Shore cast, but they are definitely not in any other situation. If you’re a fan of graphic T’s, not to worry! Like we’ve said, there are always other alternative looks to sport that will still suffice. Our suggestion is going for a subtler graphic T and you can find these anywhere from Ben Sherman to Converse to Urban Outfitters. They are a great substitute because they are super trendy, easy to wear, and won’t make us women feel like we have to out-sparkle you.

Cargo Shorts

We know these may seem super conveniently filled with pockets for all of the “stuff” you have to carry around, but they are inconveniently out of style. If you are one that still owns a pair of khaki cargos, there’s still hope! There had to have been some other reason as to why you felt the need to buy those shorts in the first place right? Maybe for the color, or the material? Our suggestion: Lose the Velcro pockets and go for a flat front, simple pair of khaki shorts. If you are willing to take it a step further and take a walk on the bright and bold side, try out a pair of flat front red or green shorts. The colors are super trendy for summer and will definitely make you stand out. We love these bright green shorts by Steven Alan!
