Filed on October 1st in Manhattan’s District Court, a lawsuit against Steve Madden Ltd claims that Madden's ‘Seryna’ bootie is a "studied imitation" of designer Alexander McQueen's ‘Faithful’ design. Inspired by a motorcycle jacket, the black leather, open-toe stiletto ankle boot debuted in January; and has been seen and photographed on the feet of Lindsay Lohan, Mary-Kate Olsen and Rihanna. In a statement to the press, McQueen's lawyer says, "In fact, the only design element of the ‘Faithful Bootie’ that Madden did not deliberately copy is the zipper pull that contains the ‘Alexander McQueen’ trademark.”
McQueen’s lawyers were not the only people who noticed the rip off, they were just the last. Bloggers noticed the parallel similarities a while ago, one blogger notes that "The Seryna Bootie by Steve Madden is an affordable version of Alexander McQueen's Motorcycle Jacket Bootie." The bloggers do not know who to side with; one blogger believes McQueen is being ripped off while another believes that McQueen’s shoe are absurdly overpriced and what Madden did is not any different from what Allen Schwartz does every award season. Which side are you on? Better yet, which shoe would you buy?
