The ombre trend isn’t going anywhere. We’re here to show you how to get the look without breaking the bank!

As we posted earlier this week, the ombre trend is still going strong. A comfortable and easy way to incorporate the trend into your summer wardrobe is through your trusty denim cutoffs.  We love Siwy’s Camilla Ombre Cutoff Shorts and Genetic Denim’s Ivy Cutoff Shorts.

Using these as inspiration, we show you here the super-easy DIY way to make your very own ombre shorts!

What you’ll need:

  • A cheap pair of denim cutoffs (Try Goodwill)
  • A measuring cup
  • A bucket or sink
  • A bottle of RIT liquid dye (we found at Rite Aid)
  • A pair of rubber gloves

Start by rinsing the shorts with water.

Pour 1/3 a cup of dye into 2 gallons of hot water and mix.

Dip wet shorts all the way into the dye and let sit for 10 minutes.

Ring out the excess dye and add another 1/3 cup of dye to the bucket. Dip your shorts about half-way into the dye and let sit for 5 minutes. This creates your second tier of darker color.

Repeat the step one more time by adding the final 1/3 cup of dye to your batch and only dipping the tip of the shorts into the dye for 5 more minutes.

Rinse shorts until water runs totally clear. We let them hang dry for a while and then rinsed once more in cold water in a washing machine on gentle cycle.
