Just as New York Fashion Week makes its way around our corner the newest breakout designer in front of all the excitement is none other than Grammy winner ,controversial recording artist Kanye West. The news came as a surprise to fans when Kanye revealed that his new self titled collection to be released this year will not be a menswear line, but a women’s collection. The collection is scheduled to be revealed at Lincoln Center during this year’s September Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.

The buzz began three years prior when Kanye fan bloggers monitored and reported his activities in preparation to release a contemporary menswear line. This line formally known as Pastelle would follow the success of his collection of trademarked Louis Vuitton sneakers. Pastelle was highly anticipated by fans, and was highly criticized by the fashion community after reports that he had revamped the collections previous soft image. In efforts to create a brand that would match the menswear line and its new direction the brand was renamed Pastellemuseum (also viewed on his promotional Tumblr account as Past Tell Museum).

Earlier in July the rapper/singer who has received both criticism and acclaim for his collaborations with artists and designers to produce such works as the cover for his album 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' with George Condo, made headlines again at Coachella. Kanye turned heads when he sported the intended women’s knit shirt by French designer Celine. This bold statement would be the precursor of events leading to his newest business venture. Previously, Kanye was reported to be opening studios in NYC, Paris, and London.  He has enlisted the expertise of Louise Wilson, head of the Central St. Martin Fashion Institute Graduate School. Though Louis Vuitton will not be involved in this collection, Kanye’s decision to fly solo will involve collaboration with acclaimed knitwear designer Louise Goldin. There is much speculation of what will come of the breakout collection now that Pastellemuseum will never be released. One thing is for certain, anyone who follows the trend of this hip hop phenomenon knows Kanye always collaborates with the best in the industry; and fans can speculate that whatever he releases is sure to be as controversial as his music.
