Oprah Winfrey and her production crew have given us a peek into the creative processes of some of the most talented individuals of our time with new documentary series Visionaries: Inside the Creative Mind. Among various industry professionals like Tyler Perry, Will.i.am, James Cameron, and Annie Lebovitz the latest subject is infamously private designer Tom Ford. Based on headlines, blogs, and magazines, you may think Tom Ford is simply a ready to wear designer; but after watching clips of his documentary, there is so much more behind the man in the suit. Tom Ford characterizes himself as a perfectionist and very secretive person, informing the camera crew he has never allowed anyone to film him so up and close before. Upon viewing documentary footage of Mr. Ford's everyday life, calling him a perfectionist is truly an understatement.
Known for his past affiliations with popular European brands Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, Ford explains his everyday life as traveling the world, constant meetings, detailed runway shows and endless appearances. Aside from being financially and creatively successful, he still felt empty as if he's longed for something that could not be found. After retiring from Gucci Ford explains his life as depressive, becoming burned out in his forties and experiencing what some may call a mid-life crisis. It was not until Ford decided to answer his true calling for film making when he finally felt as though he could accomplish all.
Ford describes A Single Man (2009 film he co-wrote and directed,) as being his outlet for expressing his creative, yet intangible thoughts of society. "Everything you need to know about me is in that film," states Ford, proving to others who assumed it was just a "challenge" for him to make a film worth watching. Tom Ford's documentary, which aired October 23 and can be viewed online here, satiates our inquisitive mind as it portrays the many faces - fashion designer, photographer, film marker, and visionary - of the man behind the suit.
