The 11th Annual Tribeca Film Festival has consumed NYC in a flurry of cinema, celebrity, and auteur stylings. With the proceedings in full swing, this past week has seen numerous events, screenings, and soirees in honor of this yearly cinematic celebration. At its core, this film fest strives to “enable the international film community and the general public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience." In that respect, the submissions are reflective of this progressive sentiment, with each subsequent year continually raising the caliber.
This year’s entries are especially indicative of this. Taking home the festivals most prestigious accolades were War Witch (The Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature), Daniel Arrechada and Javier Nunez (Best Actor in a Narrative Feature Film), and Rachel Mwanza (Best Actress in a Narrative Feature Film). As evidenced by the victors, the two most lauded films emerging from the fest are War Witch, a coming-of-age tale about a young woman in war-torn Africa; and Una Noche, a harrowing tale of three Havana teens braving treacherous straits in their pursuit of refuge. Having received much critical praise for their deft, acute narratives, these two flicks have become the talk of the festival.
While the festival may be winding down, the best has yet to come! Saturday brings with it the infamous “Family Festival Street Fair." This yearly treat takes over Greenwich for a day of free events, screenings, food & drink, and general awesomeness. Occurring throughout the day (10am- 6pm), and ranging from (Huber to Chambers), the Tribeca Street Fair is an amazing opportunity to immerse oneself in the unique nuances of the festival.
Meanwhile, Sunday marks the end of the frenetic film fest, yet also brings with it the ideal opportunity to screen all the festival’s award winning flicks. For those yet to experience the best of Tribeca’s cinematic offerings, Sunday is the final chance to sample this year’s fare—don’t miss out!
With the weekend saturated in events and cinematic adventures, there is ample opportunity to investigate and appreciate NYC’s greatest film festival. Why not make your weekend a more culturally rich endeavor, with the added bonus of catching the odd celebrity wrangled the mix—festive!
