Shocking Drink at Haru
‘Seriously, no pun.’

Haru’s resident mixologist, Keith Dusko, has created a drink alluringly entitled as “The Electric Eel”. The kicker in this beverage is his use of items known as Sechuan buttons, also referred to as Sansho buttons, that induce an “electric sensation” when chewed – “like putting a nine-volt battery in your mouth.” I’m thinking that, for the sake of advertising, he might want to rethink that comparison. Although a Duracell sponsored beverage would be highly amusing. I can see the slogan now – “Recharge it all….except for your liver.”

The actual beverage is a margarita-like mix of premium tequila, sake, and yuzu. But that’s nothing out of the ordinary. The real subject of my intrigue, the cornerstone of mystery, the impetus for my burning curiosity, are these so called buttons. But more on that in just a bit.

Known primarily for its wide array of Japanese eats, it’s not surprising that Haro would be home to such an unconventional spirit. Drink variety gives me happy and I for one am anxious to try Dusko’s latest creation.

Further cutting edge, journalistically honed investigative reporting (thanks Google) has revealed that the items are actually part of a flower and really do induce a shock. Described as electric, Sechuan Buttons provide a kick that comes in waves, starting with a fresh citrus-like tang, moving to a peppering of the tongue and a numbing of the cheeks, and ending with a cool mouth-watering finish. Sounds like the most delicious battery ever.
