What's Your Poison?
THE Top NYC Cocktail Bars

In its Haute Cocktails article, NY Mag has listed a few of the city’s favorite cocktail bars. For superior reporting, read about them here a la Joonbug’s description.

King Cole Bar Lounge - Midtown East
2 E. 55th Street (near 5th Avenue) (212) 753-4500

Hotel bars are often among the best places to indulge and King Cole Bar Lounge at the St. Regis Hotel is no exception. Famous for its Bloody Mary, (an apparent descendant of the Red Snapper cocktail at Harry’s Bar in Paris) this mahogany-paneled booze grotto is a haven for those who like to drink in the old style. After you’ve had 10 Gin Gimlets (and will hence have to pawn those diamond earrings inherited from your grandmother), you can lean back cozily in your comfortable bar stool and summon Dean Martin’s ghost.

Little Branch - West Village
20 7th Ave. South (at Leroy Street) (212) 929-4360

Those put off by the elitism of Milk and Honey, but still want to sample some of its famed cocktail creations might want to check out this West Village gem. The atmosphere is laxer, (still, leave your cutoff “Wine Me, Dine Me, 69 Me T-shirt at home) but the staff is just as professional. The Blackberry Gin Fizz will rock your socks.

PDT - East Village
113 St. Marks Place (bet, 1st Ave. & Avenue A) (212) 614-0386

Please don’t tell anyone about this fabulous former speakeasy. You go in through the phone booth at Criff Dogs and come out feeling like superman. At least if you’ve imbibed a few perfectly mixed Vodka Martinis. For a little something sweet, get your self a Bee Sip, made of Chamomile infused Barsol Quebranta Pisco, Masumi “Okuden Kantsukuri” sake, and Barenjager Honey Liqueur.

Tailor - Soho
525 Broome Street (bet. Sullivan & Thompson Streets) (212) 334-5182

For adventurous drinkers with refined tastes, Tailor might be an ideal destination. Mixologist Eben Freeman’s creations are always pushing the boundaries on what a cocktail can be. Anyone who claims they’ve had a drink like the Crumble (Brown Butter Rum, Clove, Poire) or Sangre de China (Pink Peppercorn Vodka, Blood Orange Soda, Cinnamon) somewhere else is a liar.

Pegu Club - Soho
77 W. Houston Street (bet. W. Broadway & Wooster Street) second fl. (212) 334-5182

Arguably the best cocktail bar in SoHo - this locale, named after a British officers club in Burma, feels like a Colonialist Lounge with its palm trees and sleek, wood-paneled bar. Audrey Sauders is the mind behind the delectable cocktails. Signature Pegu Club Cocktail (lime, gin, curacau, bitters) or the homemade ginger beer are key.
