So many homes, small businesses, families and friends were devastated by Hurricane Sandy’s vicious winds, rain and flooding. Just one of the communities that was heavily tainted was NYC bar industry. In a city that’s so into food and drink, many of our beloved EV, LES and downtown bars and restaurants were forced to close their doors for over a week while some were sadly flooded.
Yet, in the spirit of resilience, the bar community has really come together since the storm to help with relief efforts. The USBG (United States Bartenders Guild) has spent many days helping to clean flooded restaurants and bars and have even hit devastated neighborhoods like Red Hook, Rockaways and Staten Island. And, many bars are opening up their doors to host fundraising benefits.
Here are a few events this week, where you can give back while getting some spirited refreshment too:
Dick & Janes: Tuesday, November 13th
Whistle Pig Rye is sponsoring a night of steeply discounted cocktails custom created by Dick & Janes resident bar dame, Miss Jessie Dure and J. Rosser Lomax from The Third Man. Choose from four tasty sips for a mere $5 which is pretty sweet since a bottle of Whistle Pig will run you about $75 at your average retail store! ALL cocktail proceeds and tips too, will benefit USBGNY’s Sandy Relief Efforts. In the name of our city, our family’s East Village, Lower East Side and downtown bars, let us raise a glass to a worthy cause.
Dick and Jane’s is located at 266 Adelphi St. Brooklyn 11205
Pouring Ribbons: Thursday, November 15
Newish, much a-buzzed about cocktail spot, Pouring Ribbons is hosting I <3 NY Drink. Donate. Help Black Out Sandy event this Thursday from 7 p.m. to midnight. Knock back a cocktail or two in support of three causes all affected by Hurricane Sandy: Governor, Arcane and Red Hook Initiative. $20 buys you some goodwill (and entry) and if you’re feeling especially generous and happen to be a foodie too, purchase a $100 ticket for a three-couse dinner for two at the restaurant drawn. Participating restos include: Goat Town, Edi & the Wolf, Beagle and Northern Spy Food Co.
Pouring Ribbons is located at 225 Avenue B 2nd floor
And all month long!!!
This month, BLT Bar & Grill, BLT Fish, BLT Burger and Casa Nonna will be donating five percent of gross sales, totaling up to $50,000, to help those impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Up to 50 percent of the funds raised will be donated to restaurant employees and their families who are in need of immediate relief and at least 50 percent of the total donation will directly support the disaster response efforts of City Meals on Wheels and City Harvest. All Manhattan-based ESquared Hospitality restaurants will also serve as drop-off locations for donated goods which will then be transported to relief organizations helping individuals directly impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
