This upscale SoHo lounge is known for its mixologists who turn out superior drink creations to discerning patrons. Inspired by a historic late 19-century British officers club in Burma famous for its house cocktails, this bar has set out to revive the lost art of bartending.
Specialty drinks worth trying include the Pegu Club Cocktail, made from London dry gin, bitters, lime, and orange curacao, or the Old Cuban, the signature champagne mojito. With all the care and time put into each drink the end result is well worth the wait. Comfortable and delicious, Pegu Club offers an Asian colonial vibe with potted plans and low seating on brown velvet couches. Great for groups or a romantic date, the spot can be standing room only or relaxed depending on the night.

One of the original New Wave of high-end cocktail bars. Hard to go wrong on the menu, but Whiskey Smash -- go light on the simple syrup -- is perhaps the best mint julep in town. [BlackBook]

If you find yourself going through the door marked with an illuminated lion insignia and the words Pegu Club on the corner of Houston and West Broadway in SOHO, you might suddenly find yourself mildly nervous. Perhaps you question your outfit choice. Where did you just stumble into? When you reach the top of the steps to the second floor you’re greeted with soft, instrumental yet modern music you’ve never heard before and the light chatter of casual conversation. The lighting is low. The décor is Asian in influence: low tables fill the room and patterned woodwork covers the windows and back bar. The whole thing is eerily foreign yet somehow inviting. When you sit down and have a sip of that first incredibly crafted cocktail, your inhibitions fall to the wayside. You get it now, and you love it.

Remember that scene from 'Goodfellas', when Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), escorted Karen (Lorraine Bracco) past the line at the Copacabana, through the kitchen, somehow navigating his way to the main floor of the club. Then getting a fresh table setup for him right in front of the stage. Fellas, this doesn't mean you go through kitchens now...There are many other ways to impress that special someone.
