Many residents of the 5 boroughs are saddened when they come to the realization that the nearest Dairy Queen is in North Bergen, New Jersey.  That’s not too far for some people who may be craving an Oreo Brownie Sunday or the classic DQ originator the Blizzard, but how often do you really want to travel to another state for one of your favorite treats?  Well, you never have to again.  International Dairy Queen CEO announced recently the opening of DQ’s first NYC location.

During an interview on Bloomberg Television’s Money Moves John Gainor spoke about the opening of three or four of the franchise’s stores in NYC, including one on the South Ferry’s Staten Island dock this year.  The first DQ to grace the big apple will be joining a franchise of over 6200 stores worldwide.

This news was revealed during a discussion pertaining to the effect of possible new city policy restricting the size of soft drinks sold in restaurants.  Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a ban on soft drinks larger then 16 ounces in an effort to fight the obesity epidemic and related medical conditions like diabetes.  While Gainor maintained that the menu should have options he also acknowledged that Dairy Queen would comply with approval of this ban.

New York City’s first Dairy Queen is due to open this summer.
