La Vara

268 Clinton Street  Brooklyn, NY 718-422-0065.

The couple behind El Quinto Pino and Txikito in Chelsea, just opened a new Spanish restaurant serving small plates in Carroll Gardens. Alex Raij and Eder Montero decided to open up a Brooklyn location once they found that the old Breukelen was up for sale, an establishment that existed in a "real neighborhood," according to Grub Street. The food will also be inspired by some of the Jewish and Moorish traditions that were once found in Spanish food.

Corner Bistro in LIC

47-18 Vernon Blvd. Queens, NY 718-606-6500

Our favorite West Village burger joint that serves up great, affordable bar food with half pints of McSorley's, now has another location in Long Island City. This is their second location and what a great neighborhood to have it in. They will be serving up the same menu, so you can still order the usual, Bistro burger with fries and a beer. YUM!

Taboonette

30 East 13th Street  New York, NY 212-510-7881

Taboonette, the new casual spot in the village, is a perfect place for all the NYU students and locals. Serving "pocket food," meaning that most of the menu is served in a pita, this blend of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine is not only affordable, but also delicious. We suggest you try the Kebab Laffa, it is definitely the way to go if you are looking for a meat-centric "pocket". It is served with tahini, lamb shoulder, hangar steak, roasted vegetables and a salad with fresh mint topped with cilantro.
