Morningstar Grillers Prime are a good choice in terms of a very general-tasting veggie burger. They are made primarily of wheat gluten and soy protein, rather than vegetables. The patties can be dressed up with basic sauces like ketchup, hot sauce or barbecue sauce, and taste best on a roll with lettuce.
The Gardenburger Original is another veggie-burger classic. These small patties are low in calories and fat, and made up of mushrooms, onions, cooked brown rice and some cheeses. These taste good on a roll with sliced avocado and alfalfa sprouts.
Composed of veggies like potatoes, carrots and green beans, the Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burger are an alternative for those bored of the soy-protein or mushroom taste. You don’t need to dress them too much, as they are flavorfully seasoned with Indian spices.
Even though they are delicious, and quite healthy, Dr. Praeger’s California Veggie Burger are best-prepared in the oven, not on a grill. This is because they fall apart easily. If you do come across the situation where you need to grill them, make sure to do so using a slightly-greased tray or foil.
Vegetarian Sausage:
In this category, Tofurky Italian Sausages are the best bet. If you are not sure where to start with vegetarian sausage, skip the Smart Dogs, and go for these flavorful fake wieners. The slightly-sweet Italian Sausage ones have a hint of sun-dried tomatoes and basil, and they taste good slightly charred. These veggie dogs can go with anything that would compliment a regular sausage, like mustard, ketchup or sauerkraut. The Tofurky Kielbasa and Beer Brats are other flavors.
Kebabs:
Tempeh Kebabs are excellent on the grill. Just cut and marinate the tempeh before you impale it on a skewer with some chopped and oiled onions and bell peppers. One delicious marinade is Spicy Grilled Tempeh by Whole Foods.
Tofu can be placed on a kebab, but it must be extra-firm. If the tofu is soft-textured, it will just fall off of the skewer when you try to eat it. Make sure to cook tofu kebabs with aluminum foil.
