Husband and wife Jenna Park and Mark Sopchak combined their talents in the culinary arts and graphic design and launched Whimsy and Spice 2008, focusing on handmade confections. Since then, we've been enjoying their light and airy marshmallows, dense and delicious brownies and crispy and aromatic biscotti. Joonbug recently got a chance to chat with Jenna about working with your spouse and why Whimsy and Spice treats are so darn addictive.
JOONBUG: What is your most popular treat?
Jenna Park: I would have to say that our hazelnut whiskey sandwich cookies is very popular.
JB: What makes Whimsy and Spice treats different?
JP: We try to add a little something special to each treat - white pepper in the filling of our pumpkin ginger sandwich cookies, cardamom in our marshmallows and chocolate shortbread, rose preserves and black pepper in our thumbprints.
JB: Does working together (as husband and wife) make things more or less difficult?
JP: It makes communication easy since your spouse is sitting right there next to you on the couch, but it's also difficult to leave your work at home. There are no clear boundaries.
JB: What is the best (and worst) part about owning your own business?
JP: The flexibility is the best part about owning our own business. We have 2 small kids, so this has been key to making our crazy family and business life work. While work/life boundaries are hard to define, it's been imperative that we can keep a flexible schedule so that we can pick the kids up from school or chaperone a class field trip once in a while.
