Calling all lushes and carnivores! Step right up! Heathe St.
Clair, owner of The Sunburnt Cow and
Bondi Road, brings you the newest (and
drunkest!) sibling to his Australian family of down under restaurants: The Sunburnt Calf.
The Calf, unlike it's Alphabet City-located Cow-counterpart, has come to the Upper West Side, hoping to shower the neighborhood with authentic Aussie barbie and drink-‘til-you're-down-under deals (down under the table, that is!). The space is also much larger than the Cow, allowing their 80-seats to take up two floors, in addition to an outdoor sitting area where you can revel in the spring weather, while also accumulating a little blush from the sun's rays. Food + Drink + Sun = blowing your mind.
To accurately represent the Australian culture while still utilizing traditional American favorites and eclectic global tastes, St. Clair fused all of the different elements together, creating inventive entrees with never-ending explosions of taste. Their famous burger, The Lot, takes the traditional beef patty, tops it with a fried egg, fried onions, beets and pineapple slices, resulting in a refreshing Aussie-imbued take on the already long-established American sandwich. Conquer that nagging Jaws complex that you've had since grade school and try the Pesto Shark. Wait, hear me out! This dish comes with chunks of fresh shark tossed gingerly with bacon in pesto and served over penne pasta. Sprinkle it with some lemon juice and, before you know it, you'll be devouring the beast that haunts the seas.
But do you want to hear a dirty little secret? Of course you do! Ask your server about "The Counter Meal." It's a naughty little deal that allows you to pick an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert and only have to pony up $18 for it. That's three courses for what, potentially, you'd be paying for two. It's a pretty damn good bargain, reckon?
All right, enough food talk. Let's chat about what you filthy-minded hounds really want to know: the liquor situation. Rest easy, lushes; the Calf's moonshine menu is extensive and quirkily creative. Under the "Moo Juice" section, all $7 each, taste The Illusion (mango-infused vodka, fresh pineapple juice and Midori) or The Island (pine-coconut Bacardi, fresh guava and fruit juice) before traveling your ‘buds over to the "Moo...Tini" portion of the drink menu. Here, tempt yourselves with the "Bundaberg Bull" (Stoli O, muddled lime, cherry, ginger and Red Bull) or the "Tamarama Glamma" (Stoli Raz, muddled strawberry, pear nectar, lemon and champagne). In addition to their come-hither cocktails, the Calf also has a decent amount of Australian-brewed specialties as well as the standard variety. Also, coming soon to the Calf is a pay once, drink all night cocktail happy hour, so stay tuned!
If you're still on the fence about this glorious joint, then you haven't heard their boozy brunch deals (or, you're just crazy). For only $18 you can choose any brunch item (their Buttermilk Banana Pikelets, Bush Benedict, or the Steak Sandwich to name a few) and be endlessly blessed with an all-you-can-drink brunch cocktail of your choice. Sold yet?
For more details from the menu, go to their website, but take heed: because of their newbie status, the Sunburnt Calf's menu isn't up yet, so take a look at the Sunburnt Cow's, as their selection is almost identical.
The Sunburnt Calf is open Monday-Thursday, 4pm-2am, and Saturday-Sunday, 11pm-2am. Come, mates, and enjoy the taste of Aussie cuisine and those drink-til-you-drop liquor deals!
