Joonbug Interview: Blip Blip Bleep
Brooklyn's electro-pop trio talks their new music video at their upcoming show at Mercury Lounge

Blip Blip Bleep is a indie electro-pop trio from Brooklyn. The band will be performing at the Mercury Lounge this Thursday, September 9th with Team Genius, Deadbeat Darling, and Tenderbox. I recently talked to bandmembers Sean and JoJo about their upcoming show at the Mercurly Lounge, shooting the video for their single, "Freak You Out," and their CMJ showcase on October 23rd.

How did you guys come up with the name Blip Blip Bleep?

Sean: Our music is pretty electronic and people often use terms like “blip blip bleep” to describe the sound of  that kind of style and after months of coming up with the worst possible names, we were like, 'Well, what if we just do something simple?' And I came up with Blip Blip Bleep. It was catchy enough and I was like, 'This could work.' It just stuck.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming show at the Mercury Lounge?

Sean: I'm a bit psyched about the lineup. We’re playing with another band that we’ve played with a couple of times called Deadbeat Darling. And there’s another band from California called Tenderbox, they seem to be doing really well. I think it’s going to be a really solid night.

What was the inspiration behind the video for your most recent single, "Freak You Out"?

Sean: I guess, everybody loves underpants! Well, the song is kind of fun and lighthearted, about a one-night-stand kind of thing, and one day my girlfriend was like, ‘What if you just had underpants falling?’ After a while we were like, yeah that could be really funny and the director liked it.

What was it like shooting the video? Do you have any favorite memories from when you were filming?

JoJo: I enjoyed doing the two separate shoots. We started with the band stuff and focused on the performance and then after that we just kind of goofed off and did the whole underwear thing. My favorite part about all of the second half of the shoot was that it ended with this awkward, yet comfortable sexual tension where everyone just ended up staying in their underwear. We all just kind of hung out with some booze and some cigarettes and just walked around in our underwear.

Can you tell me a little bit about the contest you guys recently set up for your fans?

Sean: Yeah! If you join our e-mail list between now and the end of the month (September 30), we’re going to pick four of those people and give them a free t-shirt and all three of the CDs that we’ve made.

Do you have anything planned for the near future that you're looking foward to?

Sean: We have a CMJ showcase, which we’re definitely psyched about. That’s on October 23rd at The Studio at Webster Hall.
