Michael Rother Returns to the Stage

For a band that enjoyed very little commercial success during their three-year stint in the 1970's, the landmark German art-rock duo Neu! have received the respect they deserved for most of the past decade, beginning with the CD reissue of their long out-of-print albums on Astralwerks Records in 2001. Like The Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart before them, the few who picked up their albums went on to do great things as artists, inspired by what they heard.

Neu!'s minimalistic, yet danceable, approach to rock and roll predicted punk and New Wave groups like Public Image Ltd. and Joy Division by several years, while their more atmospheric compositions laid the groundwork for ambient music by the likes of Brian Eno and his collaborations with David Bowie in the late 70's. Their influence is evident today still, and in communities as disparate as the electronic music scene to Radiohead.
