Hester Street Fair

The Hester Street Fair is all the rave on the Lower East Side. Setting up shop from 10am until 6pm on Saturdays, the street fair takes over the historical grounds of what was once the city’s biggest ‘pushcart market.’ Hester’s outdoor marketplace is the perfect place to find vintage clothing, jewelry and crafts, as NYC’s greatest vendors are called into play. Mermaid Parade in Coney Island

For those of you who don’t know a lot about mermaids, they can walk, talk and they know how to party! This Saturday, join in on the fun at Coney Island’s annual parade of sea creatures and bubbly mermaids, performers, antique cars, and floats. Jump into the summer right with some surf, sand and sun. The unique pageant showcases each participant’s expertise in mythology and whimsical clothing artistry. PUNK: Chaos to Couture

The Metropolitan Museum of Art meets punk…punk couture, that is. The Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibition highlights the history of punk clothing from its 1970 origins to its great impact on the modern fashion world. This Sunday afternoon, explore famous designers such as Gianni Versace, Christopher Kane, Karl Lagerfeld, Rei Kawakubo, Helmut Lang, and Vivienne Westwood that are featured in PUNK. HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival

Set up a cozy blanket under the stars, surrounded by the glimmer of NYC’s gorgeous high rise buildings. The HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival began on June 17th and lasts through the summer nights until August 19th. The screening of these free outdoor films, held in none other than the exquisite Bryant Park, is one of the awesome highlights of a city summer spent in the Big Apple. All Eyes on the New York City International Film Festival

Film buffs have heard of the quintessential film festivals like Sundance and Tribeca. However, our editors were in attendance at a rather special festivity this weekend called the New York City International Film Festival (NYCIFF). NYCIFF has the unique privilege of showcasing filmmakers and their work from all corners of the world. By embracing a broad cultural diaspora and integrating diversity into their mission statement, the organization is able to distinguish themselves from other big name festivals. Founder Roberto Rizzo had a few things to say about NYCIFF, “The beauty of our film festival is that it’s not just a place to see films; we’ve got special events going on for our audience and filmmakers every day. Some days we have up to 3 or 4 red carpet events and hold seminars for aspiring professionals who want to be in the business. We treat filmmakers and their films like kings with our small resources. We are putting in an incredible effort. We want to give our little push to new filmmakers in this very complex and competitive market of show business by giving them the chance to show their films in New York City.”

For the international filmmakers from destinations such as Spain, Israel, and Italy; showcasing their films in NYC not only gives their work credibility here in the US but also in their home countries. Rizzo’s wife, Caroline Johnson elaborates, “By giving recognition to filmmakers both here and abroad we pave the way for greater recognition and acceptance for them especially in their home country.” The organization stayed true to their words last Thursday night at their Opening Gala, as they introduced the premiere of South African film Little One. The film was South Africa’s official nomination selection at the 2013 Academy Awards. Although it is an eye opener about the harsh realities of rape in South Africa, the movie’s overall message is one about love and family. Let’s take a closer look at some of the official selections playing at the NYCIFF now!

Girl Rising: Award-winning documentary filmmaker Richard Robbins directs this groundbreaking work called Girl Rising. In our opinion, the documentaries displayed at this year’s NYCIFF are some of the strongest work we’ve seen. The documentary follows nine girls and their quest to obtain freedom from their oppressing cultures and lifestyles. Freedom is sought after through an education. Proving education is power and these girls’ souls are unconquerable. If you see any documentary this year, make it Girl Rising.

Full Circle: Any movie that has a young 24 year old director involved and was shot for less than $30,000 deserves a nod from us. This gritty tale of a pizza boy named Anthoni and his friends who try to combat their neighborhood's gangster had us laughing in the theater with it's parody on our generations opinion of Facebook. Yet left us speechless at times with it's serious content. “Full Circle is an amazing movie, we were completely sold out at the premiere,” says Roberto Rizzo. The director sharply comments on the cultural aesthetics of his Brooklyn neighborhood, Bushwick, through his first person narrative. Full Circle helps us gain an intimate look inside the neighborhood and its complex characters. The depiction mimics a similar film style to some of Spike Lee’s earlier works like Do the Right Thing and Clockers.

La Venta Del Paraiso: A crowning moment for Spain. This movie is told through the eyes of Aura Maria, a young Mexican woman with a troubled past, who travels to Madrid on a work contract. Once she realizes her contract is false, her world soon starts to fall apart. Aura Maria searches for her own definition of paradise in Madrid and within the characters she is introduced too. La Venta Del Paraiso is an undeniably witty film and actress Ana Claudia Talancon infuses her character's piercing personality into the heart of the film.

10 Rules for Sleeping Around: From the man who brought us, Walker, Texas Ranger, director Leslie Grief depicts a screwball sex comedy for young audiences. Starring Young and The Restless actress Tammin Sursok and Jesse Bradford, 10 Rules for Sleeping Around, experiments with the openness of relationships. Is it really okay to ask your girlfriend for a threesome? What’s deemed acceptable nowadays and what isn’t? Two couples explore these questions as they realize how much they love each other. Grief commented on his movie saying, “I had friends growing up and heard about similar things happening to them so I figured why not make a film about it. I don’t think my film is promoting anything besides the idea of an afternoon delight.” Extremely funny at times and our editors thought it seemed to comment on our generations nonchalant attitude toward sex.

It was actor Tony Lo Bianco who put it best during NYCIFF’s Opening Gala when receiving his Lifetime Achievement Award stating, “Just go out and create something. You can’t wait around for your next big break to find you. While you’re waiting, life is passing you by.” On behalf of Joonbug, we salute the NYCIFF, all its filmmakers and cast/crew! Manhattan’s Forgotten Corner

Apt. 78 Revving Up For Summer Series

Inspired by the real NYC, Apt. 78 is a dope art gallery/lounge that has been known to throw some of the wildest and best parties uptown NYC has to offer. What makes Apt. 78 so special are the people. Somehow Apt. 78 manages to have the most fun crowd of any you will find in NYC. It is not uncommon to see girls twerking, guys actually dancing, and people crowd surfing. IndieScreen Raises the Bar for Theater Experiences

Marco Ursino, the director of Brooklyn's Film Festival, an organization that promotes independent filmmakers by showcasing their movies and providing them with international exposure while bringing attention to Brooklyn as a significant intermediate for cinema. These movies can be seen at indieScreen, which is a multifaceted entertainment facility located in the infamous artsy Williamsburg, Brooklyn area. We caught up with Mr. Ursino during the festival, held annually in June, and watched an indie film that was pretty touching too.

Indiescreen combines an art gallery with a lounge, bar, and a cinema, which makes it innovative and the first place we've heard about in NYC to have all of this. The architecture compliments the scenery and staff is very hospitable. Tickets are affordable at $12 a movie and $10 for students. The sleek interior design, provides a sophisticated movie experience. Celebrities like 50 Cent choose indieScreen to shoot his video music for 'Be My Bitch.' In this brief sit-sown interview, Marco shared his thoughts on indieScreen's theater innovation and its atmosphere, as well.

Marco, you are the co-owner of indieScreen and the director of the Brooklyn Film Festival, why is independent film production important to you?

I arranged my entire life around independent movies, so obviously I'm non-objective, I love independent movies. I'm an independent filmmaking to start with. I created the Brooklyn Film Festival and this is the sixteenth year. We deal only with independent movies. As a matter of fact, if you have a studio-made or studio-initiated movie, you don't qualify. You can't even participate. Thereafter, I created a venue that I am a co-owner and artistic director in, which is indieScreen. The name indieScreen hints at what the company is about and what we do.

What attributes do indie films offer that studio films lack, aside from the big movie budgets?

I will give you a silly answer from an audience's perspective; the most evident thing that comes up is that independent movies do not follow a formula. That's why, if you watch an indie movie you don't know where you'll be lead. Chances are you will be surprised or it's going in a direction that necessarily you won't think of.

So, would you say that you have more creative control, which makes it different?

Correct, obviously everybody is after financial success. You have to come up with a formula to receive lending because you know if you spend a certain amount, you have to come back with ten times that amount for instance. Everybody is after that and there is no guarantee for it, look even studio films flop at times, but they follow formulas, while independents don't, it's more freely regarding production.

What does indieScreen bring to the nightlife scene in New York City and why Brooklyn?

Again, I arranged my life also around Brooklyn. I'm one of the pioneers, especially in Williamsburg. I moved to Williamsburg in 1993, when it was a war-zone. Nobody believed in this neighborhood. I saw it, I saw it back then, you know? Actually, it went beyond what I imagined, on what anybody here imagined. Therefore, it's a real success story. The north-side of Brooklyn is now infecting the rest of Brooklyn.

When you say that you couldn't imagine what Williamsburg transcended into, are you referring to the million dollar residential complexes and all of the other developments in the area?

I mean the development; there has been a lot of development here. Since 1993 when I first moved here, this is already the third generation of imports. First were the purist artist that were here just looking for housing space, then came kids from families with money. They were artists, but they came from rich parents. Now there's even more money here. Billion dollar investments are here and it's a flourishing community, so this is the rise and story of Brooklyn. I'm a pioneer by birth, indieScreen is truly unique because we are the first to open the door to a new kind of nightlife by offering alcohol beverages in a cinema in New York State since the 1920's. We are not the only ones doing this, but we started it in NYC. We mixed businesses here, there is a cinema, bar, lounge, and there is a DJ booth. This is a one-stop for any organized event, if you want to show a movie, that's available, reception at the bar, it is that type of venue.

There is a lot of offerings and activities going on here, how would you sum up indieScreen's atmosphere?

It's like a new wave arts center. An arts center inspired by music, art, cinema, and performance.

How does the Williamsburg community affect indiescreen's aura being that it's located here?

I wouldn't limit it to Brooklyn or NYC. I would say New York or the United States because Williamsburg is really a trendsetter. Things start here. Williamsburg is well known for artists, art galleries, bars, and restaurants. So if you're an artist, you want to be here because you'll be listened to more opposed to any other place. Williamsburg, here in Brooklyn, is leading the arts.

Do celebrities make appearances here?

Yes, but it's incognito. We don't expose it and we respect their space. Nobody bothers you, we are used to celebrities and they feel at home here.

What is the most popular drink item here?

We have a different kind of audience here, you have your beer group and your cocktail audience. Nonetheless, I'll recommend a glass of our Italian wine, we have a good selection, and they all they taste great.

Theater: Shakespeare in the Park: The Comedy of Errors

Last night the Highline Ballroom was the spot to be at for NYLON Magazine's annual June/July Music Issue bash sponsored by Aloft Hotels and the guest of honor, was none other than the cover star, Avril Lavigne!

The party was hosted by NYLON's Editor-in-Chief Marvin Scott Jarrett and Publisher Jaclynn Jarrett. In true NYLON fashion, the party was a hit as guests enjoyed cocktails, a special performance by 2012 Project Aloft Star winners, HITS and rocked out during the headlining performance by our fave, Avril.Safe to say it was a pretty nostalgic night for us gals who have been fans since Avril's beginning. Some of our fondest memories are of sleepovers with friends, both platonic and sexual. Remember the first time you got to sleep over that incredibly hot guy or girls’ house? At the end of the night the girl would change into her sexiest lingerie and slide into bed and just when things seemed to be getting steamy, bam! She would whack you over the head with her pillow and an all out pillow fight would ensue. OK, maybe that never came remotely close to happening to you. But it could happen now at Social Exposure’s Rooftop Lingerie Pillow Fight Party at XVI Lounge! 300 guests will enjoy cocktails, mingle and pillow fight in their hottest lingerie and finest silk boxers and robes.

The event will have specialty-sponsored cocktails by Hammer+Sickle Vodka. Hammer+Sickle Vodka is an exceptional product, six times distilled and six times filtered. Along with Hammer+Sickle, Social Exposure will collaborate with the Lingerie Alliance to put an official insider industry stamp on the evening. Founded by Moira Nelson and Luis Paredes, the mission of The Lingerie Alliance is to unite lingerie professionals from all aspects of the industry to elevate the industry as a whole. The Lingerie Pillow Fight Party will also feature young and talented local designer Sharon Fan of Rouge Seduire. “My line is inspired by New York architecture and Old Hollywood” describes Sharon. Rouge Seduire will preview a collection with samples and models at the event.

Social Exposure describes the purpose of the event as a means to not only fulfill every man’s dream, but to encourage creative, outside the box interaction by forcing active networking and activity that you don’t normally get to participate in. Yes, the event has a seductive side, but the main purpose is to spread a positive message of body awareness and sensuality where often times in a metropolis such as New York, social pressures can take a toll on the healthy mind.

Invited guests MUST attend in lingerie or sleep wear. Men and women are encouraged to bring their own pillows and at the peak of the night pillow fight will begin with an explosion of feathers, glitter and absolute mayhem!
