Trying to follow up a 2008 Album of the Year contender is no easy task. Just ask TV on the Radio. But the stakes double down when said album was your debut, and the crown lies even heavier upon a young brow when topped with so many laurels. Such was the dilemma for the Fleet Foxes.
In 2008 when many wondered what else could possibly wash up in the new wave of folk, Fleet Foxes turned the tides back to the old wave with their self-titled debut. Before going into the studio in last year to record their follow-up, the band felt the weight of public expectations and scrapped a bulk of the new tunes. A strenuous rewriting process ensued, the fruits of which have come to bloom on Helplessness Blues, released yesterday on Sub Pop.
One of the most highly anticipated releases this year is the new Fleet Foxes album, Helplessness Blues. The band released a video for "Grown Ocean," which features grainy footage of the band recording the album, and random events that took place outside of the recording process. It's a very pleasant video, which defiantly fits the Fleet Foxes style.
Fleet Foxes have released a second single, "Battery Kinzie," from their forthcoming album, Helplessness Blues. The album is to be released on May 3rd, 2011.
Out of all the albums released in 2008, Fleet Foxes' self-titled LP, Fleet Foxes, was one of the best, and most memorable. It was met with extreme praise from critics and fans. In a review by Dave Simpson from The Guardian, he finished off his review stating that the album was "a landmark in American music, an instant classic."
The folk rock band from Seattle, Washington, just announced their new album, Helplessness Blues. The album is set to be released on May 3rd from Sup Pop Records.
To go along with the album release, the band will be going on their first tour since 2009, starting in Vancouver, Canada, and ending in London, England.
The band has also released a single off of the album, that you can listen to below. And, for more information, head over to subpop.com.
Have you ever wanted to wear a used pair of ballet slippers worn by Natalie Portman? I know I have! Well here's your chance, Crafts For A Cause is a charity where musicians and entertainers are making crafts to be auctioned off to benefit Haiti.
The amount of people taking part in this is pretty remarkable, Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear is auctioning his guitar that he learned to play on and was the primary guitar used for Horn of Plenty and Yellow House.
The lineups for the 2009 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival have been made public. The festival, which has become one of the most anticipated concert events in the United States in recent years, will take place on the weekend starting Friday, April 17th, and will conclude that Sunday. Paul McCartney, the Cure, and the Killers have each been announced as a headliner for one of the three nights.
The festival kicks off with Friday’s festivities, which will showcase the aforementioned McCarthy, what should definitely be an exciting set from mash-up maniac Girl Talk, and what I can only imagine will be an awesome set from N.A.S.A., a collaborative effort by two deejays who worked with everyone from David Byrne to Tom Waits to KRS-One and Chuck D on their upcoming album, The Spirit of Apollo. It’s unclear what musicians will accompany them for the performance, but hopefully a fair number of the artists they featured on their incredible, genre-bending debut album will join in. One of the most underrated groups in hip hop, chilled-out west coasters People Under the Stairs, will also perform, as will The Black Keys, Morrissey, M. Ward, Crystal Castles, and Gui Borrato, to name a few.

“With the new music, we decided to put an emphasis on harmony, simple three- and four-part block harmony. The songs would be simple as well, songs about our friends and family, history, nature, and the things around us in the Pacific Northwest.”
As if Seattle couldn’t pop out one more Indie folk/pop/rock band, they’ve given us Fleet Foxes. Robin Pecknold and Skye Skjelset are the original founding members of the five person group who were later joined by Joshua Tillman, Casey Wescott and Christian Wargo. The group has been together for over a year and a half now. With a quick rise to the top this year, the band had a breakthrough and is now being recognized as an anticipated musical attraction for this upcoming year.
Rolling Stone gave their debut album four stars and compared the group to the Beach Boys, Animal Collective and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Pitchfork gave Fleet Foxes a 9.0 out of 10.0 and even the Guardian awarded the album a full five stars and declared it “a landmark in American music, an instant classic.” There are guitars, bass, drums, an electric piano, sometimes a cello or string of chimes, but no true lead singer in the band. They are certain this gives them the edge they need in an industry as unpredictable as the music business.
