Today's Earthquake: A Reminder

Did you feel it, too?

As I sat at my desk writing about why you should stay charitable amidst an economic crisis, there was a rumbling below my feet. Within minutes, news reports, twitter, and facebook confirmed what I had felt: an earthquake.

And while there was buzzing about evacuations along the east coast, "the world ending," and the fact that native LA'ers think we New Yorker's freak out about nothing, my mind took me somewhere else.

Japan.

Haiti.

Perhaps we should tweet about that.

Fashion Loves Haiti

"Through fashion we can help rebuild a nation"--that was one of the opening remarks of Fashion Loves Haiti, undoubtedly the best night of Funkshion Fashion Week, filled with heritage, real time entertainment, and flawless fashion. There's nothing more exciting than coming across new talent, and although we had expected the Haitian fashion collections to be fabulous, we never imagined that we would have left the tent so obsessed. Maybe it was the live band that shared the runway with the models, maybe it was the models who had more presence than we've ever witnessed at a show before, but we have a feeling it really was just the clothes--the tailored, tasteful, yet tempting clothes. Haitian designers have cracked the code to seductive elegance. We've seen it done in small doses by other designers, but it seemed to be the language of the fashion we saw come down the runway--the threads holding the clothes together. If there's one thing that Funkshion taught us, it's that Haitian designers set the bar. At least for us, fashion will never be the same, so we feel more than obligated to drop the names of the game changers.

Wyclef Jean Shot

Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand this weekend just outside Port-au-Prince. He was immediately sent to a local hospital and released a few hours later, in good shape.

It happened the night before the country's presidential runoff election. Remember that Jean is a former candidate for the Presidency, but officials in Haiti barred his candidacy because he lives primarily in New Jersey.

Pleasure in Plaid

If you have sex and enjoy it, then why not make it the best experience possible by knowing that you are helping to prevent deadly sexually transmitted diseases. Sir Richard’s Condom Company uses plaid-packaged condoms as a tool to help implement a healthier and safer society, which in turn makes everything that much more pleasurable for their consumers. The humanitarian team at Sir Richard's Condom Company’s sole purpose is to embrace this racy issue and make it not a shameful experience but a beautiful one. Promoting safe sex around the world and “bridging the gap” of the shortage of free condoms available in high-risk regions is the goal of CEO and co-founder Mathew Gerson.

Wyclef Jean Takes His Cause To A Whole New Level

Wyclef Jean has always been public about his support of his native country, Haiti. In 2007, he was named Haiti’s ambassador-at-large. His charity foundation, Yele Haiti, donates money toward rebuilding the country after the January 2010 earthquake. Jean recently told the Associated Press that he is launching a campaign called “Face to Face” to get young people in Haiti to vote in the upcoming November 2010 election.

Now, the latest news came on Monday from Jean’s family. In a letter, they said that Jean may “be a part in the government moving forward.” The letter supports recent rumors that Jean will run for President of Haiti this fall.

This all seems to be speculation right now, but if you look at his resume it’s not hard to believe that he would want to take the big job and get to the heart of rebuilding his home land.

Vanity Fair Taps Angelina Jolie

Vanity Fair created quite a buzz over the weekend, annoucing that they were prepping to shoot Angelina Jolie for their August 2010 cover.

Wow, August already?

Nonetheless, this won't be Jolie's first appearance for Vanity Fair (glance left). And, though we don't know if she will speak on the highly-publicized rumors of the Jolie-Pitt final seperation or her infatuations with adoptions, we're sure to see her glamorous lips paired with a flowing gown of some sort.

Because she's just that classy and wants to be taken seriously.

The mag is currently keeping mum on any clothing decisions and story topics.
