Matteo Mezzetta’s Mysterious Black and White Photos that Aren't

Matteo Mezzetta’s work looks like candid photography at first glance. He captures busy crowds and everyday people. However, he’s no amateur with a point and shoot. Mezzetta’s work actually requires even more concentration and skill than the average photographer. What makes his photos so special? The fact that they aren’t photos at all. Mezzetta’s candid shots are actually oil paintings.

He has a taste for movement and finds beauty in the bustle of everyday life. Although many of his series appreciate the stillness of nature, it is his people and animals that fascinate viewers the most. It is rare for any one of Mezzetta’s subjects to stand still. Even his paintings of objects has a sense of movement. He does not capture a moment or gesture that seems grand, like a dancer frozen mid-motion, but things we find ourselves doing everyday. He finds a simple moment and makes it so real that it becomes grand. The simple acts of reading, walking, or drinking become important because of the attention paid to them.

Black & White Wins New York

Your favorite cookie. Your yin yang tattoo. Your Dalmatian.

The co-mingling of Black and White, Good and Evil aptly parallels your weekend party adventure: utter hedonism balanced out by some spirituality. (We didn’t see you at Mass Sunday...)

And we know why. This weekend’s Black & White Festival, held at Governor’s Island sold out both days, providing partiers with a packed dance floor and promoters with smiling pockets.

Last year, New York promoters jumped on the European platform with attempts to bring their festival brands overseas. There were two installments of Matinée, the notorious Saturday party at Ibiza’s Amnesia; however only flying in one or two DJs from the group and none of the dancers did little to replicate the Spanish troupe’s insane pyrotechnics and naked burlesque. Last year also witnessed New York’s first Black & White, a brand which pawns off of Amsterdam’s Sensation Black and White. Historically, the “Black” day hosted gabber, hard style, hardcore, and techno, featuring artists such as Chris Liebing, Lady Dana and Mauro Picotto; while the “White” gave soaring solace with trance, and in later years, house artists.

2011's Emerging Electronic Talent

It’s finally arrived. House Music. What constitutes “house” is an argument as tiresome as Monday morning. But the bottom line is the genre’s borderlines have becoming increasingly blurry. With pop artists like LMFAO and The Black Eyed Peas venturing into the electronic sphere, and DJs like David Guetta “selling out,” house music has officially become mainstream. Littered with hip hop, banal vocals, and abrasive electro bits that attempt to harmonize the various musical styles together (but really just reminds those who used to stay at SoundFactory until 2 pm that they’re too old for the club).

Below are the top 5 upcoming house (broadly categorized) DJs to hit America:

FREQUENCY Kennedy Brock
The Maine Event

In celebration of their new album, The Maine has been touring the country, presenting ‘An Evening With The Maine.’ Guitarist Kennedy Brock sat down with Joonbug.com before the Foxboro show Sunday night to discuss the new album, the band in general and future plans. “Boston [Foxboro] is one of the bigger shows on the tour and we're really excited," Brock states. “There was a lot of effort that went into this album and into this tour and [we want to make] sure everyone leaves happy, both listening to the [new] record and when they see us live.”

Brock made good on his promise of “some new [songs] and a lot that we haven't played on past tours.” Older favorites like ‘Girls Do What They Want’ and ‘Into Your Arms’ were mixed in with new jams from Black & White. Despite the release a mere four weeks prior, the crowd new every word and sang along to the new tracks. Everyone definitley left happy; mission accomplished.

'Black & White' Adds Color

Life isn't black and white, even for rock-stars. With their new release Black & White (Warner Bros), The Maine will undoubtedly please fans and music lovers alike. They reprise and amplify their unique sound with ten new tracks (twelve on the deluxe version, it's worth it!) that will leave fans wanting more.

The album is almost like a roller-coaster in structure, appropriate because most the songs are about growing up and experiencing life. We start at the top of the ride with "Don't Stop Now", a fun, energetic song, perfect for a party or just hanging out with friends. The song preps the listener for what is to come. Like life, the album is full of ups and downs; high energy songs broken up by more mellow tunes.

Trend List: Black and White

Some things in fashion are, shall I say, a bit...Strange: guys in Uggs, acid washed jeans, fur bikinis. But when it comes to wearing black and white, the rules are pretty, black and white. This high-contrast color scheme seems to be a trend that never goes out of style; black and white still looks sophisticated and fresh for spring and summer. This year's black and white prints are more likely to be stylized than floral, but don't get rid of last summer's black and white florals yet because you can still wear it this year.

This trend is not only for clothing, this season designers are using the color scheme for accessories. Chanel , Viktor & Rolf and Manolo Blahnik all do superb jobs at using black and white in their shoes. Chanel does a classic white lace up boot with a black toe, while Manolo Blahnik does a black and white cutout, lace-up pump. Viktor & Rolf takes a different route and does an all over black and white striped pattern with ‘bulls eyes’ up the center lacing.
