Coming off Fashion Week we are both exhilarated and exhausted. What a huge season, not only for the designers, but for us! We worked around the clock, resulting in our biggest, most extensive fashion week ever. We covered a combined total of nearly 100 runway shows and parties over the course of the week. We also attended the Fashion 2.0 Awards, Socialyte.co's Bloggers Brunch, Elle & Style360's Accessory Lounge, and CFDA's IMPACT exhibit. If you're wondering if we've slept, the answer is "No!" In addition to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, we also covered NOLCHA, also known as Independent Fashion Week. There we discovered standout, lesser known designers who have been flying under the radar; including Danilo Gabrielli, Vassilis Zoulias, and JetSet Collective.
The Lela Rose Fall 2012 collection was inspired by creations of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The challenge and subsequently success of great architecture is the fusion of structure and movement. Motion, as seen in Calatrava’s works, is a combination of romanticism and functionality is what designer Lela Rose chose to capitalize on in her Fall 2012 collection. The prints and fabrics in this season’s collection: linear labyrinth organza, hazed floral embroideries, and carbonized silk; all possessed a graphic, angular characteristic and three-dimensional appeal. Even the softer, floral print was approached with the same aesthetic as geometric shapes were created with contrasting seams. The collection was styled with ankle-strap heels and socks. “The stacked heels resemble architectural beams in a rounded, arched way,” said Rose. Continuing the Lela Rose for Payless collaboration, we can expect to see eight pairs from the runway available in stores this fall. The models wore a deep brick-colored lip, defined eye, and side swept, delicately coifed locks for an overall polished and refined look.
Tuesday night I caught a brief ending to an open Q&A with Ruffian designers, Brian Wolk and Claude Morais. The design duo spoke on the craftsmanship of their Fall 2010 bevy- taking note of their silk blouses, flaring knee-length skirts and cropped jackets. Brian expressed major enthusiasm when speaking about the sequined jersey dresses, which required the designers to send them out for handmade work. The small, yet intimate event allowed attendees to roam the studio admiring the designers sketches, artwork and wall of inspiration. The collection was partially inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Nights, a theme that carried through the vintage arrangement of images within the design room. The evening was hosted by Friends of Fashion, a national social enterprise created to support the fashion industry through scheduled exclusive events, private shopping parties and designer meet-and-greet opportunities.
